Bubba Watson is the right Masters winner for these turbulent times. Augusta National may be a bastion of the 1%, but Watson is a down-home guy with a homemade golf swing whose dream car is the General Lee, the hot rod from The Dukes of Hazzard, which he recently bought at auction and has been tooling around in ever since.
In the moments after Watson's unlikely victory at the 76th Masters, he thanked, in order, the Georgia Bulldogs (his alma mater), Jesus Christ ("my Lord and savior" and the host club's African-American locker room attendants, members of the 99% that make up Watson's core constituency.
A native of the Florida panhandle town of Bagdad, ol' Bubba got himself in a pickle last summer when he played a tournament in Paris and couldn't quite summon the names of the famous monuments he had visited, alluding to "an arch" and a museum that "starts with an L."
He's not exactly a student of golf history, either. Once asked about Tiger Woods's pursuit of Jack Nicklaus's various records, Watson said, "I'm not sure how many Masters Tiger has won. Actually, I'm not sure how many Jack has, either." He did add, helpfully, "I know it's a whole mess of 'em."

I doubt if many of the other Masters winners have thanked the clubhouse attendants right after their victory.
Every time he opens his mouth or he appears anywhere, the good ol' boys who run The Masters have to cringe. They are stuffed, pompous shirts. Talking to you Bily Payne!

(48,181 posts)Bubba is a stereotype of the southern white suburban racist deliberately ignorant white male.

(17,111 posts)He may be suburban now, but he grew up poor.
He's not perfect, but he is far from the stereotype you readily see.

(4,528 posts)I am as liberal as anyone and even I watched Dukes in the late 70's. Granted it was because Catherine Bach was so hot but I never found the show racist. It was just cornpone humor and a put down of the establishment.
I don't think Bubba is racist. he would not have asked Obama to play basketball. I think he is OK. My kids go to UGA and it is not a hotbed of liberal politics and there is still some bad racial stuff there but I think this guy is OK.

"Two days ago, they called my manager and said we can't do it, that NASCAR pulled the plug on it," Watson said. "They said the reason was the Confederate flag on top. I understand if I was using it in that form. But I bought because it's (number) 01, from the TV show, and who doesn't want a car that's been jumped (in a TV stunt)? The TV show was about moonshining, driving in the backwoods in those days."

He wanted the replica. Not pc or racially sensitive. However, I don't think he rattles around in it to poke people in the eye.
I'm sure nothing I do or say will satisfy you. I have been around the stereotypes you talk about all my life. They are hate-filled, mean, and nasty people. I'll take Bubba at his word until he shows me some other side.

(48,181 posts)Got it. My apologies to 'Bubba' and the rest of you. Whatever was I thinking.

(5,819 posts)on the tv show The Dukes of Hazard, a show that was popular with young boys (in particular) in the 1980's. The show unfortunately perpetuated many stereotypes about the South and Southerners that many Yankees took as the Gospel and hold onto even today. My younger brother who just a few years older than Bubba Watson, LOVED the Dukes of Hazard and the General Lee. If he had grown up to be a car guy (which he didn't) that might well be his ideal car now, because what it represents is a memory from childhood. Just for the record, my brother is white, Southern and very definitely not a racist.

(48,181 posts)oh but ain't nothing racist about that either.

(17,111 posts)If you read the sentence, the third thing Bubba did was thank the club's attendants. They were black.
How on earth is that racist and why does it make Bubba a racist. I'm sure he didn't stand in the locker room and announce, 'I would like to thank all the black attendants.'
As I pointed out, I doubt if any other champ has thanked them right after he won no matter what color they are.

(48,181 posts)sorry for not being a fan of jesus-loving General Lee infatuated Bubba and the Augusta club where all the 'locker room attendants" just happen to be african americans, that doesn't admit women and only grudgingly admitted those same african americans. I'l go do 30 tebows in penance.

(4,528 posts)and I am Asian and my dad wasn't allowed to swim in the public swimming pools in St. Louis in the 1930's. Augusta is certainly racist and the members are full of it but that doesn't mean Watson is a racist. Separate the two. I think he is an honest wholesome guy who is Okay. It's you who has a problem.

(4,528 posts)was his decision not to blow off his wife when she told him she couldn't have children. Many men who have just crossed her off the list but he just accepted it and romanced her. I'm sure she had a lot of men blow her off and that is why she told him on the first date. This guy is a good guy and he is honest about his emotions. You gotta like him.
He also asked Obama to play basketball and I'm sure it is for fun.

(11,700 posts)Turns out the walk was relatively uneventful no autographs, just a couple of quick photos. Of course, there was that phone call from President Barack Obama. Bubba knew he was going to call on Tuesday. He just didnt know when. The conversation started like this, Hey, Bubba to which Watson responded, Whats up, Bud I mean, Mr. President.
Bubba said the President told him not to worry, he could call him Bud. Were all golfers, Watson remembers the conversation going and I said, yeah, especially us lefthanders.
