(135,425 posts)cameras. A LOT. And people from all sides--including some police--are saying this is a good thing.
Who knows, you know how they call a night stick a "Billy" club (whoever poor old Billy was...). Maybe they'll be calling a wearable camera a Mike Brown, and it'll be standard po-po equipment from sea to shining sea.
I think Ferguson ripped off a scab and started a national conversation. It sucks that a teenager had to die for that conversation to get fired up. I hope his death brings change in a positive way--those wearable cameras are a good start.

Though the hearts of men/women can't be changed overnight, and their minds will find ways to get around the problem of being recorded in their actions and words.
I share the hopes you express in your last paragraph, but the changes are slow in coming, and the conversation is still very slanted.
By the way, the above linked video did something I am usually almost anestethized to because of constant exposure to so much that is wrong: I broke down and cried. And could not see it through to the end.

(10,611 posts)The media only goes for shiny objects. With any luck, it will be a development from the DOJ, but they'll wait until that sorry state prosecutor drags his way through the GJ proceedings.
The only other thing that could grab the MSM's attention is some activity directly involving Darren Wilson.

(1,665 posts)I don't know. It might be a catalyst for a really bad time, but ultimately followed up by good.
Here's what I mean:
It's seemed to have made the racists really dig in and double down on their racism. It's made them be all the more vehement and in-your-face about being racist jerks.
Which, in the immediate term, sucks. It's why in the immediate term, the shooter is hauling in almost double the support money than the victim is.
However, by showing as ugly a face as possible, the racists are turning the young, and the middle against them. The worst are getting worse, but at the same time they're shrinking their numbers. The worse they make themselves look, the less folks will want to associate with them. And eventually, old age catches up with everyone.
And in the end, they'll have done the work of making their views go extinct. And that's good.
I hope.

(2,584 posts)I am a little old for being considered middle aged, but I am against all forms of bigotry.
Hopefully, the cover has been permanently ripped off, exposing just how ugly it all is. And the philosophy of hate will finally be starved to death, and receive the long-overdue burial with dishonor that it deserves.

(41,991 posts)I can't think of any way that we can address the horrors of what people will do to one another unless we face the pain, and sometimes the injury and death, of talking about it.
It really is the same thing that makes us go to war, but there are people we are also close to and can't exactly war with, and we're still hanging onto being too civilized to do that, but it's a very serious conflict and if we're ever going to solve it we have to hope we're appalled enough by it to stop and figure out how to work together.
Run-on sentence but I hope it's understandable.
