Family: Bullying by 'wolf pack' led to Texas teen's suicide

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/04/10/11118720-family-bullying-by-wolf-pack-led-to-texas-teens-suicide?lite

Family friend D. Garcia (right) hugs Mingo Molina, father of Ted Molina, last Wednesday during a rally against bullying outside Flour Bluff High School.

Bullies had been hounding high school freshman Teddy Molina for years, making fun of him for being mixed race and threatening to hurt or even kill him, his family says.
The teasing from a group known as the “wolf pack” grew so bad that Molina wound up leaving his Corpus Christi, Texas, school last month. Then he took his life last week with a hunting rifle.

Molina’s death has triggered outrage and tumult in his South Texas community: an anti-bullying rally erupted into violence, a rumored gun threat online led to a stepped up police presence at Flour Bluff High School and a number of parents have come forward claiming that the district is not doing enough to combat bullying.

1. I don't understand why bullying is tolerated, ever. Coaches should NEVER allow bullying of any sort

and they should be ousted if they're knowledgeable about bullying and permit it or do nothing about it.

is a pretty serious crime. Yet, there's no mention in this story that anyone called police about it. Why didn't they?

Parents, if your kid is the victim of a felony, will you please call the police and report it? Don't pretend they aren't really crimes just because they take place in a school. They are crimes and they should be treated as such.

3. What strikes me about this story is people generally say in it that Molina was generally well-liked

and was "friends with everybody" except this wolf pack. Many people will tell kids that as long as they have at least a good friend or two, that's enough to emotionally protect them against bullies. I don't think that's the case. People need to name the bullies, call them out, go after them, unite against them, and refuse to stand for any of it. Threats to kill are a crime; call the cops. Name the people and quit calling them a stupid club name or gang name. "Wolf pack"? Fuck 'em.

6. Or has a new bully been created? There were at least three or four gatuitous punches to a guy .....

who was on the ground with his hands on the ground, not only not punching, but not even covering his face. I was bullied and I stood there and took it and finally snapped when I was younger but the 'rules' were when the other guy stopped, the fight stopped. A school yard fight is not the same as ultimate fighting with a tap-out required to end it. I commend the kid for standing up, but once the bully went down, that really should have been the end of it. Law does not recognize getting even after defending oneself.

I cannot believe that the school does nothing to try and stop this, even after the death of a student due to it.
