the double standard by police toward dogs has got to stop

The gist of Lexi's story is this. Her owner left her in the care of her grandfather who has mild dementia while she went to work her overnight shift. Her grandfather let Lexi out and forgot to bring her back in. Lexi was barking to come back in; the neighbors called the police. The police videocam exists of the cops talking about killing her on their way to the house because, in the words of once cop, "I don't do dogs." The grandfather forgot she was his granddaughter's dog at first; then remembered and started to bring her into the house. Before he could, the police shot her repeatedly. He demanded to know why they shot her. They then said what are we going to do now (since she wasn't dead) and discussed killing her with a shovel. They then got the noose around her neck and she obediently walked into the back of the animal control van with them. In the back of the van, they shot her several more times, and then left her to bleed to death. She never attacked. They were just a couple blocks from a veterinarian and humane society. There was a 2nd police car up the road and she could be seen on that car's video cam, which somehow disappeared (removing evidence of her so-called attack.

Police shoot dog 8 times after barking complaint

SAINT CLAIR SHORES, MI — When a man with dementia accidentally left a dog outside all night, neighbor’s called police to silence the dog’s barking. Police obliged by firing 8 rounds into the dog in its front yard.

Unfortunately her grandpa’s mild dementia caused his memory to be impaired. During the evening he let the dog into the yard to go to the bathroom, and forgot to let the dog back in.

Hours went by. The dog waited by the door, barking for its owner’s attention. Preston’s grandfather failed to hear the barking or remember his mistake.

According to the police report, police officers opened fire when the dog “charged” at them. Eight rounds were fired into Lexie.

According to ABC-7 Action News, witnesses reported that as the dog cowered against the house, police kept shooting. If this is indeed true, it is hard to imagine how the excuse of “fearing for their lives” could have been at play at any point after the dog retreated or “cowered” next to the house.

Lawsuit Against City, Police Claims Dog Was Shot 15 Times Over Several Hours

An attorney for Preston released a statement which includes the scenario that upon arrival and approach of the dog, police dash camera video obtained from a Freedom of Information Act request recorded an officer saying, “The only thing I’m going to do is shoot it. I do not like dogs. I don’t do snares. I don’t do dogs. I’ll shoot the <expletive> thing” and “I’m gonna shoot it anyway.”

The suit also claims that “it is unreasonable to show up for a barking dog complaint with an express premeditated intent to shoot her and then to repeatedly shoot her. When Lexie did not die, they apparently took her and shot her several more times.”

8. Is it because budget cuts have done away with the "dog catcher"?
Sat Aug 30, 2014, 05:37 PM
Aug 2014

I have really been getting upset about how the police simply shoot a dog if it's barking. Of course a dog is going to bark. Of course a dog will be defensive. That's all they have to defend themselves. And then if the police are on their property, they will defend their home and family.

I've have been wondering why it is police responding to dog issues. Wasn't it back in the day animal control or we kids called "the dog catcher" handled all animal related complaints. I rarely if ever see one of those animal control trucks anywhere.

Because taxes keep getting cut and revenue to municipalities keeps dropping, the "dog catcher" position has now been eliminated and the role delegated to the police.

The police are being tasked with doing too many things they are not trained to do. They don't know how to handle the mentally ill so they just shoot them. They don't know how to handle a defensive dog so they just shoot it. Either fund local govts to handle these individual situation or fund training for the police so they know how to handle them and stop shooting people and animal unnecessarily.

I am in suburbia outside of Denver and I never see an animal control truck. Though there must be some as there are animal shelters where stray dogs are taken. I suppose those could be people finding dogs and taking them to the shelter. But I would imagine some towns have them. But I really don't see much of an animal control presence where I live and areas I travel around to.

On July 15, Olson filed a federal lawsuit against the city of St. Clair Shores, police officers David Jacquemain and Jeremy Moskwa, and animal control officer Tom Massey. The lawsuit alleges that in killing Lexie, the defendants violated Preston's Fourth Amendment rights and her civil rights.

According to Candgnews.com, the officers involved in the shooting have already been disciplined. Massey was reportedly suspended for a month without pay. One officer was counseled and the other had a letter of discipline entered into his file.

On Edit:

At one point, Preston's grandfather can be heard saying he cannot remember if the dog was in his house. Later, he said he thinks the animal belongs to his granddaughter, at which time he agrees to allow the animal to come into the house. However, before Preston's grandfather could allow Lexie inside, the police officers shot at her four times, with three bullets making contact, according to police.

A well-developed body of federal law holds that police unreasonably killing a dog violates the owner’s Fourth Amendment rights. It is unreasonable to show up for a barking dog complaint with an express premeditated intent to shoot her and then to repeatedly shoot her. When Lexie did not die, they apparently took her and shot her several more times. We are asking the Court to hold the Defendants accountable for violating the Constitution and my client’s civil rights. Ultimately, we want justice for Lexie.”

that has fuck all to do with how officer canines are treated.

The biggest reason I could never become a police officer aside from the unwillingness to put my life on the line every time I go to work is this shit. Never in a million years would I respond to a call for help from a single one of the tiny minded cop haters here after spouting the kind of crazy posted here multiple times a day anymore.

Need help after the kind or horrifying garbage displayed by so many here? FUCK NO. Crash and burn... you bought it. But they can and do every single day and night over and over again year after year after year. And the sickest part about the shit spewed here every single day anymore is the same people slinging it KNOW they would and let that vileness just roll off their backs. Not me. No way would I be lifting a finger for anyone that only has the guts to spew the irrational hatred but doesn't to step up to the plate themselves and expects the very targets of such utterly mindless vilification to come and help when they call. That's also why the police wouldn't have me even if I wanted to do what they do or had the guts to. And not a single one of the crazy spewers of filth here have the guts either or they'd put their money where their big mouths are, sign up and show all those cops how they think it's done.

You made this thread of purely anecdotal ugly using a sad and moving funeral for a police dog posted by someone else that actually has humanity and sense to spew this bullshit and all because the overwhelming desire to vomit more irrational cop hate is just that fucked up and uncontrollable. Congratulations. You even inspired someone to actually say they wouldn't feel for any human cop that got killed in the line of duty. And you all think that's NORMAL while calling yourselves liberals/progressives/Democrats! That shit isn't even HUMAN, but there it sits unchallenged. Proud of that?

crazy, out-of-control premeditated actions like the murder of this poor dog to be just fine and dandy, but any justified expressions of horror and outrage here to be "horrifying garbage"? Seriously? Boy, do you have your priorities so far out of whack it's unbelievable.
