Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsNon-disruptive Meta Thread! Dear Hosts,
I did a boo-boo last night and got removed from Hosting a day early. Not complaining, but I didn't get a chance to do a thanks and good-bye thread in there so this will have to do! It is a little disorienting to not have ANY red file folders on the left of the screen on the Latest page. I have been a host pretty much from the beginning and several MIRT terms. Those are always hard adjusting at first but this is my first time not hosting.
I think the new system is working pretty good and want to thank all of you for past, present, and future participation. It seems with my little transgression it will be at least 3 months until I can volunteer for anything, so I will focus on participating "out here" in the main forums and groups.
I already miss working as a group, the tasks, and the links to threads I might not otherwise see.
Thanks again,
Kali

(13,685 posts)Hiding host threads from the People is not in good keeping with openness and transparency. All but hosts can be blocked from posting in those threads and there is no reason for us to not be able to read what the hosts are saying about the members.
Thanks.
it would just cause worse meta crap - if your record is clean and you have a star you can sign up and read all you want.
most of the alerts lately have just been repeated attempts to post gun threads in GD. those and the folks who can't follow directions for posting in Latest Breaking News, - it is pretty mellow now that the crew is thinned out a bit and the GD guidelines are more clear.
The DU3 promise of transparency is pretty much like the Obama admin. promise of transparency.
Practically nonexistent.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)And you might not believe the caterwauling that a few of the hosts spew.
Hence the idea that if they knew, and we knew, what the hosts had to put up with, it just might clean the place up.
It is admitted that the place is cleaner these days. I wonder who else they booted because of the caterwauling?

It's getting pretty easy to see why people just want a safe place to talk without the hysteria of those that can't accept that their disruption is not wanted because it's just a way to get posts hidden. How lame.

(16,954 posts)LOL, and do they rotate their nit-pick shifts on you all? Holy crap! I can see getting heated about issues, but even without issues, they just stalk and stalk and stalk. It's really, really pathetic, hysterical even They are just obsessed.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)because truthfully I think very little about them.
Yeah, it's the absence of issues that is especially ridiculous. It's a lot of angst about nothing. So what if someone doesn't like a random stranger on the internet? It's easy enough to ignore the person. I certainly can get wound up from time to time. I did early this morning, but you have to let it go and move on. It's self-destructive to hold on to that stuff.
R B Garr
(16,954 posts)Yet, you can tell she was shamelessly gunning for a hide on one of you, especially sea. You handle it really well, I must say. It's impressive, but I'm sure it's tiresome at times, and that's what they play to. They just keep up the barrage of nonsense, and sooner or later, they'll get lucky and get a post hidden. Except tonight it backfired on her, LOL.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)She posted in GD a couple of months ago? That was quite the spectacle.
R B Garr

Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)And i suspect that clusterfuck of a month-long meltdown which followed the posting of that picture, will be what people remember most about DU in 2014, in years to come.
It's firmly ensconced in legend, right up there with the moon bombing.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)So it would seem all went according to plan.
The joke, which you clearly didn't get, is that she does bring it up all the time. "It was me. It was me." She likes to take credit for it, so we should respect her agency. Don't you think?
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)I bring up the moon bombing all the time, too.
Both are clear examples, of my mind, of the tendency of some folks in this place to get real weird about real weird stuff. For weeks, even.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)That was before my time.
Yes. It's the same photo. That's the point. It was expressing approval for her having posted the thread.
She likes to talk about how everyone gave her shit, when of course virtually no one mentioned her during that period, which clearly she found frustrating since she ran around telling everyone "it was me." I certainly am not one to deny another woman's agency. Her choices and what she claims as her successes are hers to make.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Post it. That the posting was a deliberate attack on women on DU, and that the posting was done specifically with the knowledge that it would precipitate 3 weeks or more of complete shit-losing in GD, over it.
When, after all, previous swimsuit issues had been posted, in previous years. What sort of Nostradamus- like prognostication skills were required to predict what would happen with this one?
And of course, all of the "disruption" could have been avoided if folks hadn't spent 3 weeks flippin' out over that one picture of women on a beach.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)Claim it was a form of protest against . . . what was it . . . "mean girls," the wrong kind of "feminism," political correctness or something along those lines, so that certainly played into the notion it was a joint operation, as does the post I just linked to. But she posted it, and she claims credit for the whole thing, so far be it from me to belittle her successes.
The disruption could have been prevented if people had remembered they were in the 21st century instead of 1962. That of course is impossible for some.
It is hardly surprising that your solution to problems is for "feminists" to keep their mouths shut and let their betters control public space.
I myself avoided what clearly was deliberate flamebait. Now you insist the fault lies not with the person who posted the flamebait or even those who responded, but with people who did not post in that thread. It must be awful to have to share the planet with women who don't accept our responsibility for the decline of Western civilization that has accompanied our refusal to stay in our place.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)And again, like i said, the SI swimsuit issue was posted in previous years as well.
But if my goal is supposedly to get people to keep their mouths shut, i must be doing a crap job.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)Indeed, you aren't doing a very good job of it, but that doesn't stop you from trying. Actually the escapade had the opposite effect. It allowed more than hundred members to witness misogyny in action through the continued dismissive and hostile responses to women who raised concerns about objectification. They then spoke out and said they finally understand that HOF had not been exaggerating the prevalence of misogyny.
Now tonight we had another stunt out of outrage that a man who had referred to women as "skanks" dozens of times in a thread had been told to "shut the f up." That didn't turn out quite as planned either. Thems the breaks.
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Which is, as it should be.
BainsBane
(53,035 posts)I'm guessing because they shared the sentiment.
But yeah, calling women "skanks" wouldn't' be a personal attack. That's "freedom of speech." What people do get exercised about does reveal a great deal about who they are. Naturally someone who refers to women in the most vulgar ways must be held in esteem above the rest of the DU membership.

(80,708 posts)Despite my apparent reputation as all manner of foul things, I don't think I ever have.

R B Garr
(16,954 posts)How else are you going to get posts hidden? That seems to be the goal. Look at the glee in which you talk about a "month-long meltdown" as if it's "Mission Accomplished." So transparent.

(146,317 posts)I'm very sorry some turned it into something else. Like you, I recently had a post hidden, the first one in years. So, I won't be able to host, either for a while. I'll try even harder not to say anything that would cause another hidden post. I like the new rules for hosts. They make excellent sense. Only those who can disagree without becoming very disagreeable will be able to host. That's good, I think.
I need a link!
I certainly haven't gone years, but I do try to stay sane. Sometimes it is just worth it, though. And sometimes the ones you think might get hidden don't.
Hosting is kind of thankless, and it irks me when they get accused of things they don't even have the power to do by people who could just sign up and experience it for themselves. Of course that was even easier before the new requirements and the waiting list but still, to not avail oneself the means of examining the situation one is paranoid about seems kind of disingenuous.
I will definitely sign up again if and when my "record" is clean again. As a mostly Lounger, I benefited from occasionally following alerted links to threads I would normally never see. I am copmfortable and like working with consensus, and I like the teamwork it fosters between folks who rarely interact or are even antagonistic "out here." That happens with MIRT even more, so I continue to urge members to volunteer for both!
