With a handful of exceptions, a shroud of silence has been drawn by the international media regarding the fate of Malaysian Airlines MH17, which crashed over Ukraine nearly six weeks ago.
Immediately after the plane crash on July 17, leading US officials, with Secretary of State John Kerry at the fore along with sections of the US and European media, alleged, without a shred of evidence, that the passenger jet had been shot down by a Russian missile fired by pro-Russian separatists operating in eastern Ukraine. The completely unfounded allegations were then used to create a frenzied political climate to justify the imposition of wide-ranging sanctions by the US and the European Union against Russia.
Since the crash there has been deliberate stalling on the part of Western authorities in releasing relevant information. At the start of this month Dutch investigators leading the inquiries announced they would release a preliminary report in a few weeks. Now, with only days before the end of the month, no such report has been issued. This is despite the fact that the Dutch co-ordinator for the struggle against terrorism admitted in parliament that the Dutch authorities already have extensive data from the black boxes and other sources in their possession.
<edit>
Noting that Dutch authorities already have considerable information about the details of the crash which they have undoubtedly shared with their German counterparts, the Spiegel article warns that it is unlikely that the black box recordings will ever be released in full. The Dutch investigation team recently announced that there were alleged legal grounds for withholding evidence from the boxes.

(13,685 posts)Thing is there is nothing in this report that is out of the ordinary. This is pretty much a straight up telling of facts as concerns this situation.
Some may get their hackles up, but hey, that's what's cool about DU.

Calling facts that are inconvenient to a particular narrative CT is a convenient way to remove it. Any of the mods are granted the ability to make this determination and as far as I know there is no internal jury or other check to see if it is accurate.
This is similar to how things get censored in the media, why we, as liberals want to participate in a form of censoring of stories is puzzling.
Interestingly, reporting on the war in Ukraine is one of the stories this year up for inclusion for Project Censor's list of 2014.

(3,982 posts)Project Censored has validated that events in Ukraine are not being properly reported.
Project Censored - Validated
http://www.projectcensored.org/category/validated-independent-news/
Validated Independent News stories (VINs) report information and perspective that the public has a right and need to know, but to which it has limited access. Before being posted as a VIN, each story undergoes evaluation by student researchers and faculty evaluators to determine that it is important, timely, fact-based, well documented, and under-reported in the corporate media. These VINs are candidates for inclusion among the top 25 stories in Project Censoreds annual book.

Igel
(35,320 posts)Why?
One reason is probably the same one that shamans who could predict eclipses would call for the sun to go black shortly before it happens. If you can convince people you're really powerful and important by claiming to control what's going to happen anyway, just wow. Doesn't work with more information. "It's 6:30 a.m. and I, Igel, potentate, order the Sun to rise!" Most people know it's going to come up even if I oversleep. Takes a certain kind of stupid to fall for that one.
Another (do you invariably have just one reason for doing something?) reason is probably to highlight what the report's not going to say. RT, RIA Novosti, Lavrov and Peskov adore saying what isn't said. "OSCE find no evidence of troop crossings" ... given a 120-mile long border, OSCE observations for 2 days, and a total of 16 OSCE members in teams of 2 and 4 accompanied by minders, that's not hard to arrange. At any given moment perhaps 16 miles of border is observed, and what parts will be observed is known ahead of time. In a few weeks we'll read, "MH 17 report does not say pro-all-good-things freedom fighters are guilty." Nor, of course, will it say that Jesus is risen or account for the distribution of dark matter in the universe.

Due out in soon. Had problems getting access that they were guaranteed access to. And "a few weeks" can cover anything from 3 to perhaps 6 or 7 these days. Won't assign blame.
Putin likes everybody else to be perfect. Esp. when he makes problems for them. He probably considers himself to be perfect. I wonder where the imperfection lay in his divorce--was his wife just not up to his exalted standards of purity and perfection, or maybe she decided she could do better as far as finding a human being to have in her life?
