It turns out that very few support Executive Action on Amnesty.

As we enter the final two months before the mid-term election, our party is desperately seeking some populist cause to rally the voters. I've read the articles that downplay the danger, and I've been reading them all year. However, all of those articles feel like they are grasping at straws and somehow praying that something happens to make the Democratic Party popular again.

Let's review. NY Times rates the probability of the Rethugs taking control of the Senate at 66% today. This changes every day or two, but it's been over 60% for two weeks now.

RCP no toss up map shows the Rethugs at 52 seats.

Now, to polling about how popular the idea of Executive Action on Amnesty. This will really get the voters out for us, or something.

President Obama's push to unilaterally enact changes to the nation's immigration policies is running into fierce opposition from the public, including a majority of his own party.

According to the latest IBD/TIPP poll, 73% of the public say Obama should work with Congress on reforms. Just 22% say he should "sidestep Congress and act on his own using executive orders" — something the president has repeatedly pledged to do.

Among independents, 78% say Obama should work with Congress, with only 19% saying he should go it alone. Even among Democrats, only 39% say Obama should act unilaterally, while 54% say he should work with Congress.

OK, so Executive Action on Amnesty is more popular than Congress. But it's far less popular than increasing privacy by reigning in the NSA. It's more popular than Herpes, but it's less popular than demilitarizing the police.

I'm assuming that the White House has similar internal polling numbers, and is even now trying to figure out how to do something symbolic without offending any more potential voters. If we want to stay in the majority, we have to embrace some of these populist ideals and run with them. Otherwise we're going to lose in November, and we'll have nobody to blame but ourselves.
