Many of my closest friends were once homophobic.

They are no longer, through knowing me.

You can't change the world by sitting inside a big glass box and making up lies about "the scary people". 90% of the time they're doing exactly the same thing.

The best way to combat prejudice isn't to shout at prejudiced people. The best way to combat prejudice is to be in front of the prejudiced and NOT be what they expect you to be.

The best way to defeat hate-filled people isn't to hate them back - it's to help them reject that part of them that is hate-filled. Change an enemy to an ally.

That's not always possible, but if possible it's the best solution.
