Gov. McDonnell convicted: Looks like the GOP has a new 2016 Presidential front-runner.

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2014-09-04/ex-virginia-governor-mcdonnell-convicted-in-corruption-trial

Robert F. McDonnell, the former governor of Virginia, was convicted along with his wife of charges he traded political influence for loans and gifts valued at more than $170,000.

Robert McDonnell, once seen as a possible Republican presidential contender in 2016, and his wife Maureen, a former Washington Redskins cheerleader, were accused of misusing state resources for the benefit of businessman Jonnie Williams. In exchange for helping Williams promote the dietary supplement Anatabloc, the cash-strapped McDonnells were showered with gifts such as private plane flights, golf trips and a $20,000 shopping spree for Maureen.

A federal jury of seven men and five women in Richmond, Virginia, in the third day of deliberations, today found the McDonnells guilty following a five-week trial.

Both Robert and Maureen McDonnell broke down and began sobbing as the guilty verdicts were read out. They face as long as 30 years in prison.

Glad you're here, too!

I know, I know... shouldn't, shouldn't, shouldn't. BUT IT FEELS SOOOOOO GOOD!!! And I guess it feels so good because it's set against a backdrop of hundreds of cads like this asshole and his wife - getting away with it, getting a rap on the knuckles if anything at all, not having to pay for all the fancy goodies and not having to pay because they took advantage like that and used their political positioning to line their own pockets and rake in a bunch of ill-gotten gain. People like him forget that when they aspire to public office, they become Public SERVANTS. Get that last part? SERVANTS. You're in public office, you work for the public. For the greater good of the public. THEY'RE your employer and THEY'RE YOUR boss. It's not the other way around. Something the "royal romneys," mitt and ann would never want to admit or recognize.

But even Prince Charles of England remembers what his position really is and how he's OBLIGATED, and he's of real documented honest-to-goodness blue-blooded royalty, not the crass nouveau-riche kind we have in this country. His motto as Prince of Wales is "I Serve." I believe it's on his signet ring and his coat-of-arms. And it's something he's been brought up with, so he's lived it all his life - that sense of obligation that he owes. One reason why I do appreciate the British royals. (And I know that's a loaded statement around here, too - and I can totally appreciate where those who don't appreciate the monarchy are coming from.) But the royals of the UK grew up with this sense of noblesse oblige - much blessed, much OBLIGATED. You are OBLIGATED when you're born into wealth and privilege. You are OBLIGATED, especially if you're born into a sense of obligation - to help, BECAUSE you can. BECAUSE. It's instilled in you - to those you serve in that high position - that you are OBLIGATED to them. That's why they do so much charity work, and are patrons of so many causes. In this country, the Kennedys were like that. Fabulous wealth and privilege, but almost all of that first generation of kids (at the JFK/RFK/Teddy/Shriver level) went into public service in some way.

These sleazy Virginia grifters just thought it was their big fat free cherry pie to dig into whenever they wanted. The easy way to the high life. Use your high-level position that the people of your state entrusted to you - to enrich YOURSELF!!! That's evidently where EX-gov. & mrs. Gimme Freestuff went, did not pass "Go," and did not collect $200. (Although, in the beginning, it was more like nearly $200-THOUSAND dollars' worth, I think). They sure didn't collect any $200 today.

As a pro-choice advocate, I am LOVING this! RELISHING this! I realize it's unconnected, but this just seems like sweet, sweet, incredibly sweet justice for that asshole with his forced vaginal probes and ultrasounds. Forcible entry into a woman's vagina without her consent? Where I come from, that's called rape. In his case, it was State-Sponsored Rape. Even worse: State-MANDATED Rape! So maybe he goes to prison and finds out what it's like to be on the receiving end of that kind of thing? I wouldn't wish THAT on anybody, either. Not even him. But I do wonder what such an outcome might do to his narrow, misogynistic mindset?

Most of the problems that bedevil the GOP come from lack of empathy. That bad stuff happens to Other. To "Those People." They hate "empathy." They laugh at it and scoff at it and sneer at it. It's a description of derision, diminishment, a clear diss. And it's why they don't know and don't care and don't want to have to change. It's why the all-white leaders of Ferguson MO say "racial problem? WHAT racial problem?" They don't know, don't care, and don't recognize anything as needing fixing. It's why so much of the persecution of women is led by, instigated by, legislated by, and dictated by mostly men.

The tragedy of Bob McDonnell
There may never be a fully satisfactory explanation for why a politician of such promise behaved so recklessly. Though the indictments were not unexpected, some longtime McDonnell associates are still in a state of shock and disbelief. Republican fundraiser Bobbie Kilberg, a steadfast McDonnell ally, said she simply did not believe the charges leveled against her friend and called the indictments a “witch hunt.”
“It makes me want to cry. It really does. The Bob McDonnell I know is not the Bob McDonnell portrayed in that indictment,” she said. “I just don’t think those things happened. He said he showed some poor judgment and he apologized for that. To destroy his legacy of public service — it’s despicable.”

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/pat-robertson-prosecuting-bob-mcdonnell-corruption-destroying-nation

Today on “The 700 Club,” Pat Robertson and Jay Sekulow did their best to paint the former Republican governor of Virginia as the victim of a “political prosecution,” decrying his corruption trial as a “political witch hunt” spearheaded by Attorney General Eric Holder.

Those talking points went out with the speed of light!

McDonnell would have used the power of god, the power of his office and some type of magic wand to further restrict womens health care. Whats a little graft and corruption between men of faith?

Still it seems that Pat Robertson is loosing his touch. He should have known something was amiss when god only lent McDonnell a Ferrari, took him out for a night on the town and did not buy him a Mercedes-Benz.

... is that juries are getting tougher on these kinds of things I think. Proving there was an actual quid-pro-quo beyond a reasonable doubt would be impossible without a receptive jury.

This kind of corruption is rampant IMHO and I hope this is the first of many who have to face justice.

in my home state of Virginia. We had a complete swipe during the last elections (gov, lt-gov and attorney gen.) and now we are cleaning house as well. I hope McDonnel spends a long time behind bars and that the virginia assembly passes tighter laws regarding
gifts and donations to elected officials. Its a joke right now.

Gov Mc Auliffe is trying very hard to get the medicaid expansion through, but its blocked because the GOP still control the house. Hopefully this will change. Virginia is turning bluer at every election.
