Judge orders Scott to stop fighting request for email records

TALLAHASSEE — A Tallahassee judge this week ordered Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi to stop fighting attempts to allow Google to turn over basic information about the private email accounts used by the governor and his staff to conduct state business.

Circuit Court Judge Charles A. Francis ordered the company last month to disclose when the email accounts held by the governor and his staff were established and by whom. The action is part of a public records lawsuit filed against Scott and Bondi by Tallahassee lawyer Steven R. Andrews.

But the Jacksonville attorney hired by the governor to fight the effort refused to agree on the language of the subpoena, delaying it for weeks. Andrews then asked the judge to intervene. Francis overruled Scott's attorney, Thomas Bishop, on Thursday.

The two-page order allows Andrews to seek subscriber information for the Gmail accounts used by the governor and two of his former staff members, Sarah Hansford and Brad Pipenbrink.

Andrews alleges that the governor's office encouraged staffers to use Gmail accounts to circumvent the public records law. He thinks determining when the accounts were established and by whom will help determine who was involved.

Scott has said his account, gov.rls@gmail.com, was used to communicate with his family members, not for public business, and that he has "followed the law."

However, emails to Scott's Gmail account have surfaced from his former chief of staff, Steve MacNamara, after MacNamara left the governor's office.

Repugs have been doing this for a while now. Multiple incidences of them using private email to circumvent the law.

He DIDN'T follow the law. And if he only used it for family communication, he should be eager to prove it. After all, if you're innocent, there is nothing to fear...

If his staff members or other government employees are among Scott's subscribers, he's got a problem -- especially if he endorsed it.

Rick Scott is a known liar and presided over the largest Medicare fraud in history. He took the fifth in depositions about it. I'd say the people of FL have every reason not to trust him when he says he only used it for family. Especially since e-mails from his former chief of staff have be revealed.

That if I use my personal e-mail account at any time for government work in FL, the entire account becomes public record subject to discovery in a trial. This is why I never do that.
