All Gotcha and shite! Rofl
PRESIDENT OBAMA:
Well, theyre not a JV team. But keep in mind that we anticipated some of these problems in the speech that I gave at West Point you know, several months ago, where I specifically said, our goal should not be to think that we can occupy every country where theres a terrorist organization.
Our goal has to be to partner more effectively with governments that are committed to pushing back against the kind of extremism that ISIL represents. And thats going to require us to do things a little bit differently. Were going to have to work smarter.
Were going to have to train the military there more capably. Weve got to do more effective diplomatic work to eliminate the the schism between Sunni and Shia that has been fueling so much of the violence in Syria, in Iraq. And so we put together a plan that is compatible with the kind of work that were doing now.
ISIL poses a broader threat because of its territorial ambitions in Iraq and Syria.
PRESIDENT OBAMA:
But right. And II want everybody to understand that we have not seen any immediate intelligence about threats to the homeland from ISIL. Thats not what this is about. What its about is an organization that, if allowed to control significant amounts of territory, to amass more resources, more arms to attract more foreign fighters, including from areas like Europe, who have Europeans who have visas and then can travel to the United States unimpeded, that over time, that can be a serious threat to the homeland.
In in the more immediate term, its an imm its a threat to friends, partners in the region and is causing all kinds of hardship. And weve seen the savagery not just in terms of how they dealt with the two Americans that had been taken hostage but the killing of thousands of innocents in in Iraq thousands of innocents in Syria, the kidnapping of women the complete disruption of entire villages.
PRESIDENT OBAMA:
Not yet. But they they can evolve. And I was very specific at that time. What I said was, not every regional terrorist organization is automatically a threat to us that would call for a major offensive. But what is absolutely clear in ISIL, which started as Al Qaeda in Iraq and arose out of the U.S. invasion there and was contained because of the enormous efforts of our troops there then shifted to Syria, has metastasized, has grown.
CHUCK TODD:
"Youve not said the word, Syria, so far in our conversation. Obviously, if youre going to defeat ISIS, you have used very much stronger language. Its gone through the week during your trip to Wales. You got to go to Syria in some form or another."
"Notice that Obamas last mention of Syria came two sentences before Todd made his fatuous statement.
If one of the traits of a good interviewer is listening to the answers given by the subject, Chuck Todd fails. Miserably."

(4,113 posts)This exhibit by Chuck Todd shows how our MSN stooges don't listen to responses from the person being interviewed. Todd was hell-bent on continuing the propaganda that Obama has no strategy in the Middle East; he's soft on defense; he's using other events to divert attention away from the problems in the Middle East, and so on.
This is why I have stopped listening regularly to network news and the Sunday morning programs. They're a joke! These pretty boys and hot blondes behind the cameras aren't even journalists.

(59,504 posts)to question reacting to the response. I remember a time where it was the norm that the host of any such show could do this at least reasonably well. I have long considered that by watching hearings where witnesses are grilled, I could better evaluate a Senator or Congressperson by their followup questions than the first (possibly staff written) question. I was amazed by the number who do not ever follow up anything. The ones who impressed me were those who heard a person say something new and who immediately asked intelligent follow up questions. I also respected other Senators who, speaking later, referenced questions and responses of those asked earlier. The ones, often in an act of grandstanding, who spent their entire time reading long, well phrased "questions" that were not even intended to elicit any real responses did not impress me.
As a talk show host, this is what Todd was like - he had his prewritten questions and even, in this case, where the question obviously should have been skipped or changed to simply ask about the very real difficulty of what Obama intended to do in Syria, he blindly read from his script.

It will depend on who catches this and decides to try and profit from Chuckies tin ear. Obama was smart not calling him on this will have to wait and see who makes a joke out of a obvious flub when eagerness to a gotcha moment falls flat. He may get a high five from Scarborough but somebody at NBC will be holding their breath waiting for fallout. It may be interesting to if there is any mention Chuckie on Morning Joe. Even Saint Tim of Russert got panned on his interview of Bush the Lesser before he knocked on the Pearly Gates, for playing whiffle ball with W.

My daughter works student services in College. Recently she passed an exhibitionist caught on tape that was not noticed by multiple female students including her. When shown the tape she was not upset by the exhibitionist but her lack of situational awareness in a professional capacity. Chuckie has nothing to feel smug about when he reviews the tape. It is going to be an ongoing test how he explains this embarrassment. Chuck may well find out that as an exhibitionist he is not very good in that capacity.

Sadly, again IMO, President Obama lost so much of his political capital by refusing to prosecute banksters and other elites for the crimes they committed on the vast majority of Americans, not allowing universal healthcare on the table, and many things that most Americans thought they were electing him to do.
Now (and for most of his presidency) the republicans have found their obstructionism (which has hurt 90% of us) tolerated by Americans
because we feel that the status quo trumped the common good, again.
We managed to survive 8 years of a petulant sociopath as POTUS. We watched as our economy was deliberately destroyed from within
(most of our politicians were complicit), our children and many middle eastern people were slaughtered for fun and profit, our economy was governed by those who had destroyed it, austerity for the majority (not the wealthy) was implemented, basically the poor and struggling have been economically devastated, so much more yet no one was prosecuted for war crimes, economic crimes...crimes against humanity are fine if you are wealthy. The political capital which was plenty, turned into a deficit.
Now when common sense proposals (higher minimum wage, etc..) are put forth by our president and are obstructed by mainly republicans, we the people just feel beat. No where to turn because it is unclear who is really on our side.
There are shining exceptions. Senators Warren and Sanders and a hand full of others have led by example and feel as cheated as most of us.
We are gun shy. what will be the next trick visited upon us? IDK the answer but I do believe if those most responsible for crippling America were held accountable (damn, those statute of limitations....) President Obama could possibly regain that capital. As a "lame duck" president it may not matter.
With real leaders like Sanders and Warren a lot of this would be turned around. Working within the confines of a 2 party system it will not happen and I fear that the Stockholm syndrome will play a major role on 2016.
A (at least) viable 3 party system is IMO the only way that progressives can lead America to the paradigm where we actually have public servants working for US.

(12,233 posts)would be able to catch any Americans that have fought with ISIL before getting onto a plane. I would think that anyone travelling from that region and that is a younger man, would be flagged as a possible "suspicious person". AND they seem to even know how Western young men are travelling back and forth into this region: They are going through other countries like Turkey to make their way into the fighting front.
I think we also have to ask ourselves what sort of ginned up lies are coming out of the entire story that is ISIL. As of a year ago, this disjointed group of rebel fighters where battling against the Assad regime in Syria. In fact, we had our own Senator Bomb, Bomb Johnny standing over there with these rebel fighters taking pictures with them and yucking it up... At that time, I believe Rachel pointed out that ole' Johnny, hasn't met a world crisis that didn't call for American boots on the ground and bombs in the air, was meeting with Al Qaeda operatives and fanatic religious rebel leaders. At that time, many of us were questioning who exactly it was that "doing something" types popping up on every Sunday talk show would be training and arming with American weapons? AND I'm sorry, but I'm not exactly believing that there wasn't some sort of CIA initiative going on behind the scenes in actually arming and training these rebel fighters. Are we really to believe that these rebels just happened to stumble over US military clothing and boots exactly in each other's sizes or that ground to air missiles are just haphazardly lying about for anyone to pick up or that tanks and other military vehicles are sitting around like its a used car lot for the pickings? OR that the outside funding coming from Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region aren't helping to fund and sway young men into the fight in this region? I'm sure many of these young "militants" care more about a steady paycheck for their families than they care about the extremism of the groups leaders. AND at that, who knows how real or fake this "caliphate" is among the leaders? Is it more akin to a "battle cry" and viewed as a means to excite and bring in support for their rebellion; similar to our Patriotic/ God/ wrapped all in a flag type of mentality goes within our support of our military by citizens of this country (so much so that they see their own lives sucking ass and their children's education suffering as they watch more than 1/2 of all their tax monies going toward building bombs instead of building up our nation)?
Does anyone feel it seems suspicious that this ISIL group gets their act together so supremely in the span of approximately a year, and that they cross the Iraqi border almost immediately upon the news of President Obama peacefully, through negotiations, getting the Assad regime to hand over all chemical warfare in that country without having to bomb or put boots on the ground in Syria? All of a sudden this ISIL group, dressed in American military garb, driving American military vehicles, and utilizing American weapons, is an extremely dangerous army and they are taking over Iraq. What happened when this group advanced, they took over certain regions and threatened groups of people and regions in Iraq that the American people would be described narratively as the "good guys" in Iraq, we went in with "advisors", we bombed ISIL targets, and we got Maliki to remove himself from office (perhaps mission accomplished? who knows, perhaps he was being stingy with oil contracts? Lord knows the Iraqi people should be making enough oil profits to arm their own nation's army and security without having to rely on the United States). Also, this is popping up just before mid-term elections and making President Obama's narrative of successfully retreating from Iraq a positive item and makes McCain and Romney (media's favorite Sunday morning arm chair quarterbacks), seem as if they were right and the Pres was wrong.. yada yada... Plus, now the beheading of 2 American journalists to espouse shock and outrage among Americans (like torture and drone bombing village weddings doesn't piss the hell off out of people in the region we are warring against). AND that this group is using these items of aggression and beheadings as a direct meme to the world and specifically the West, that they want a war with America. The UK is upgrading there "terra" alerts and fearing a targeted attack.
Is anyone thinking all of this seems a bit staged like "yellow cake". Is the MIC fearing peace? And to be fair, I know there are people within the whole rebel group that are dangerous, would chop off my head if caught exposed over there. I'm not naïve as to how those doing the fighting and killing and dying aren't as manipulated as any soldier of battle who is sent to fight by those at the top of the power structure. Is it just too much to ask that we can try to live in peace. Build schools and homes, instead of weapons that cost a lot of money and only destroy? Could we not try and hand over a more peaceful world to our children? We have been at perpetual war now for longer than my son has been alive. He has only known a world where we have wars in the ME and is taught revised and inaccurate history regarding 9/11, "yellow cake", "War on Terror", and "patriotism". Does this seem like it should be normal--to live in perpetual war/ terror/ fear? Spend all of our tax labor on destruction? Literally destroy local economy, school funding, infrastructure funding on paying for war toys, fighter jets that don't work, bombs and drones... I'm just so fed up with it all, and I desperately am hoping there are no scheduled war games or that the NSA, CIA, FBI, HHS (the alphabet soup of policing) miss something as Thursday approaches. Two years ago we had the Benghazi debacle on 9/11; I'm really hoping that we don't have another anniversary attack.

Picking Todd to host was a decision I knew would backfire - they should just let that show rest in peace.

(34,845 posts)This was classic. I wonder if Todd is simply too nervous on the inside to listen to his own interview. Probably deep-seated fears of not being good enough and he isn't but he's 'lucked out' on his rise to this position.
If he continues to fail like this, he won't last long in the spotlight.

(233 posts)I thought I was mistaken when I first heard him, then I realized I was not -- Todd apparently had his questions lined up and was not about to be deterred by anything the President said.
Todd is a seasoned newsman so I can't dismiss it at first-day jitters. This is how MTP is going to be with him at the helm? Same as with Gregory?
PBO conducted himself well considering he was dealing with a partisan hack who was more interested in his own fame than informing the public. Todd succeeded in informing me that he is not up to the job.

She got called up there and this was her chance to show everyone that she was smart too! When it came her turn she bid one dollar! Only thing was, she wasn't the last bidder! The guy going last bid two dollars and won! The indignant look on her face, like that guy had just cheated her, was priceless.
It's really just a shame that The President didn't actually laugh and say, "I just said Syria at least for times Chucky! If you ask me a question, do your job and pay attention to the answer." Like the old woman, Chucky's plan didn't include paying attention.

My experience has been that the listening skills of Americans, in general, are just deplorable.
Hasn't anyone here had the experience of trying to explain something to someone, on a customer service line, for example, and they'll ask a question to which you've just given the answer moments before? It shows their mind was somewhere else.
People don't practice the art of listening to what others are saying. It's pervasive. And it's responsible for a lot of misunderstandings and miscommunications.

That has just one of the president's references in ("ISIL poses a broader threat because of its territorial ambitions in Iraq and Syria" before Todd puts in his prepared question that shows he wasn't listening. The most obvious, from 2 sentences before Todd's idiocy, isn't there. Perhaps the interview was edited before transmission, and the transcript is accurate for what went out. But in that case, they should have edited out Todd's gaffe too, rather than editing the interview to make it look like he hadn't talked about Syria much and leaving the accusation in.
Full video here - Syria discussed from about 7 minutes in, followed by Todd making a fool of himself.

There is no bigger "get" for a political show than the POTUS. I have no idea why the President helped Toad out by giving Toad this interview during Toad's first MTP show. Had it been up to me, I would have booked the Pres on the competition on Toad's first day.

(81,308 posts)Glad you're here, too! I gave up on it during tim russert, who during campaign 2000 showed himself to have become a wholly-owned subsidiary for the RNC. Ever since that revelation that jack welch was showing him around some GOP campaign bash and he was thoroughly enjoying flashing open one side of his jacket - to show the bush/cheney campaign button he was wearing. Never trusted him again after that.
And david gregory became one. Somebody got to him. I remember how he was such a dog-on-a-pants-leg during that one White House news conference with scotty mcclellan in early 2004 - when there were so many open questions about dubya's mysteriously-truncated Texas Air National Guard service. He was ON IT! Gave scotty an absolute ulcer! And that was that. Never again did he probe a story like that. And shortly thereafter he was seen in his lovely "MC rove" party dance with kkkarl rove at some black-tie event. Totally owned. And I never trusted him again, either.
"Meet the Press" hasn't been worth it in a LONG time. "Meet the Press" was one of those must-do shows for all the bush/cheney neocons who fanned out across the landscape to sell the Iraq War. That tim russert hour was more of a stovepipe of lies and distortions and misrepresentations and flat-out PNAC-spun fairytales than ANYTHING else!

(13,616 posts)The bunch of privileged people with the connections (and in most cases, the right complexion) who simply do not try to understand that they could be wrong, because frankly, they are above being called out on their crap. It is what enable them to discount Obama, because let's face it, in their eyes, he is not legitimate, because the default setting for power is someone who looks like they do.
He knows he cannot be called out on his shit because his facts are already made up, indeed, he no longer has to pretend that he is interested in facts, or helping an audience make up it's mind; the Koch brothers did that already. He is the willfully stupid, the sort that takes pride in the fact that he will not have to question his owners, since he knows that they promised him the winning side of history.
You know, I love Rachel Maddow, but the fact is, she is just a princess in a tower, something to make the MSNBC dragon look good, as if to say "see, I do not eat all my captives, I just let Morning Joe degrade Mika once in a while." The day and age when we could trust any media, mainstream media, even so called liberal media is over. That is sad, but also a good thing, as we will know that, regardless of whether we watch al Jazeera, RT, Huffpo, we know that EVERYBODY has an angle.
