http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2014/09/08/ncaa-restores-penn-states-football-scholarships-postseason-eligibility/15293041/The NCAA restored Penn State's full complement of football scholarships and reinstated the Nittany Lions' postseason eligibility on Monday.
Penn State had lost scholarships and postseason eligibility in the aftermath of a pedophilia scandal involving longtime Nittany Lions assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.
"Penn State has made remarkable progress over the past year," said Harris Pastides, Board member and University of South Carolina president. "The board members and I believe the Executive Committee's decision is the right one. It allows both the university and the association to continue to move toward a common goal of ensuring that educating, nurturing and protecting young people is a top priority."

(609 posts)I can hardly stand to read my Facebook feed sometimes with all the truther nonsense perpetuated by some alums. That being said, I am happy for current players, coaches and students that the ncaa has made this decision.

(35,015 posts)I'm so happy for them too. And can I say I love Hackenberg?

(609 posts)I'm glad to see that things are looking better for Penn State on so many fronts. I took my older son to the Spend a Summer Day program a couple years ago and it turned out that that was the day following the release of the Freeh report. I had a hard time summoning some enthusiasm. But I've been happy to see PSU focus on its academic and research achievements and opportunities since then. In fact, I took my younger son to Spend a Summer Day just 2 months ago and it was by far the best time investment wrt college tours. He may find a home there eventually, and we would be happy to see him attend Penn State---except for the cost aspect, that is, since we are out-of-state!

Jesus Christ! They were covering for and enabling a child rapist
for DECADES.

(182,826 posts)They turned over a police car. It doesn't matter if those responsible are gone - the institution allowed it and should continue to be punished.
This is ridiculous

...And they're still punished with less scholarships. No reductions in sanctions.
Meanwhile a coach @ PennState rapes a bunch of kids and the school knew about it....sanctions gone!!!
Great message!!

(51,311 posts)ONLY THE PRESIDENT DID.
I am not minimizing Sandusky's crimes, but they involved the law, not NCAA by-laws.

(56,177 posts)because it violated their standards clause, which they said was why they accepted the report. Now they're caving into big money pressure, as always.

(7,412 posts)They have a whole new set of players, Joe is dead, Sandusky is in prison, they have a new President and Athletic Director. Why punish people that had no involvement in the past problems?

(33,688 posts)The current players and coaching staff had and have nothing to do with the previous corrupt regime. The Augean Stables were thoroughly mucked out. Sandusky will never be a free man again and Paterno's deader than Dillinger.

Keep in mind, all the actors from that storied past are gone! No use continuing to punishing the innocents.
