"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." DWIGHT D EISENHOWER, speech April 16, 1953:
and...........my guess is, he really did see what war was all about...
Quite a long time ago, and you will never hear that from any Republican today...

And no one paid attention.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.
This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

(38,434 posts)still vote for these current assholes...
Eisenhower in the OP, said basically, war hurts the poor and those in need, these current Republicans, basically say, "Screw the Poor and those who support them, all that support them, and let's go to war for the rich..and powerful.

(124 posts)In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt quit the Republican Party and formed the short-lived Progressive Party (aka Bullmoose Party).
"To destroy this invisible Government, to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day."
1912 Progressive Party Platform, attributed to Theodore Roosevelt

(1,713 posts)It's amazing how having firsthand experience with something often forbids extreme positions one way or another. "Guns or Butter" used to be a central question of statecraft, up until the point where they figured out they could charge BOTH to the "future generations will pay it" credit card.
