Mayor de Blasio named the city’s first Chief Technology Officer Tuesday, tapping tech executive Minerva Tantoco for the job. Tantoco grew up in Flushing, Queens and went to high school at Bronx Science.

Tantoco, a startup founder and holder of four patents who comes from a CTO job at UBS, will be tasked with expanding the city’s tech economy and finding ways to use high tech tools to help city government. She’ll run an Office of Technology and Innovation within the mayor’s office.

“There’s no question to me that we’re only scratching the surface of what government can mean for a redemocratization of our society, for a much greater involvement of our citizens in all matters of civic life,” said de Blasio, who announced the appointment at the NY Tech Meetup.

“Our goal is to make New York City the most tech friendly and innovation driven city in the world,” she said.
