Deep Breath: George Zimmerman deserves justice.

Not just for Trayvon or Trayvon's family or for himself, but for us; for the American judicial system- flawed and fucked up as it is.

Political boards on the net, across the spectrum illustrate why it's critical. The facts need to be brought to light and examined for all to see. That's what his parents, who have been fantastic examples of dignity and courage under stress and while in great pain want.

The results may or may not be satisfactory- and if it's a plea bargain they probably won't be even if Zimmerman gets jail time, but the process is important.

Oh, and I'm not telling anyone else to take a deep breath: I took one before posting this because I don't imagine it'll meet with a great deal of approval.

Is a fair trial even possible in a 24/7/365 news media cycle?

I have been contemplating this question and I believe the founding fathers never imagined this "zoo" taking place.

If the cops fucked this up so badly that real answers and justice cannot be obtained,

then THEY need fair trials all around.

Yours, Cali, might be the least accusatory and I credit you with possibly doing some self reflection in posting it, but nonetheless...

I've seen no one here calling for a lynch mob. Nearly all I've seen here--no matter their personal feelings on guilt or innocence, have simply wanted him arrested and charged and for there to be a CHANCE of justice prevailing.

So, for the next 8 or 10 DUers wanting to post something like this, please don't..... It isn't necessary and increasingly your fellow DUers may resent being condescended to.

one can barely read a post about any of this without having -speculation- presented as hard evidence.

Fact is, none of us know very much about what happened, but that doesnt stop most americans from spewing nonsense.

Im glad dude is in custody. That he killed a juvenile and was walking free was absurd. But remember the burden of proof is on the prosecution.

Totally unwarranted, given my post.
Totally unnecessary and clearly meant to be condescending.

The thing that pissed people off was no charges being filed when there was dead body, a gun and a confessed killer. If the jury decides Zim is innocent then so be it. Thats our system.

... we (Americans) want a fucking trial. That was always the point: the police corruption and racism is what enabled and encouraged Zimmerman to think he could murder an innocent kid in the street, in cold blood, and walk away with a pat on the back. There is no separate justice for Zimmerman and Martin.

There is only justice.

As one whose served on a jury and seen how the judicial system can work I am a strong believer in how the system can and does work. One thing for certain...it doesn't connect dots...speculate or try to fit narratives to serve agendas...it's based on fact and the law. It doesn't rely on some long lost brother or self-annointed talking head or "anal-ist" to project what happened it will go with what evidence is available and determine if laws were broken and then decide guilt or innocense. Now I know this doesn't sit good with those who already made up their minds and will find fault with anything that deviates from their pre-determined "justice", but fortunately we still have this system. Now let's let it work...because if it doesn't, we all have lost a major part of our "freedom".

and now we'll watch the trial. Well, some will watch and others like me will just watch for stories here on DU. I am hopeful this is a good prosecutor - she could've gone for the easier manslaughter charge but she didn't. That makes me hopeful that she has evidence, a plan to present it, and we will see justice done.

This is one case where I think justice is best served by going to trial rather than a plea bargin as more is at stake than just the guilt or innocence of George Zimmerman. A plea bargin would cover up the shoddy, perhaps criminal, police work at the crime scene, what the role of the dad has been in this and a number of other items as well. And I think this prosecutor understands that side of the case as well.
