When did all news become 'Breaking'?
I've been noticing on the 10 PM local news that they lead off every newscast with a 'Breaking' story. It doesn't matter how ordinary it is - as long as it is something new - it is labeled 'Breaking'. This seems to be happening on cable news as well.
The other thing I've been noticing lately is that once a story is broke (i.e., U.S. initiates airstrikes in Syria) that every time they report the story after it is so-called broke (i.e., first reported) that it still remains 'Breaking'.
I guess this is starting to irritate me. I guess I expect a 'Breaking' story to be new News and not the same News that has been reported on over and over since the story was first reported.
This has prompted me to ask the question - What constitutes a Breaking Story and how long does it remain breaking?
I know why the newscasts are doing this - to get our attention - but - after they beat this dead horse again and again - you tend to stop listening and ignore. Seems to me that they are defeating the purpose of 'Breaking News'.
I'm curious if this is just my old age is registering in my mind as irritating or if others feel the same?
At least here on DU - Latest Breaking News - is new News. Sure maybe many posters initially report it as Latest Breaking - but after it has been reported as Latest Breaking - it eventually relatively fast just become news and additional posts don't label it as Latest Breaking. Not so in TV News though.
