I Live In Jefferson County Colorado. The Christianuts Have Taken Over Board.

No one will say it out loud but the conservative majority on the Jeffco School Board are all Christianuts who have their own secret agenda to get religion back in schools. The change in history curriculum is just one phase of their agenda. They desire to instill conservative Koch values in the Jeffco school system along with their agenda. Let's be honest about the deranged Jeffco members they are radical as can be and the school system will suffer because of them. One of their main supporters has been the Faith Bible Chapel in Arvada.

I know two of the progressive school board members and have been on campaign events before these idiots took over. It has been a battle to keep the board more progressive. We had a good slate of progressive and moderate candidates who did not prevail. Part of the problem is that the church voters prevailed.

These conservatives ran as a group and convinced enough voters to vote for them in a low turn out election. And the right wing churches supported them completely because they want religion to be part of the school curriculum.

As Jefferson county goes so goes the state and the nation. And Jeffco is the new target of the religious right. If they can take over, destroy the teacher's union, instill a Koch conservative curriculum in the Jeffco school system and begin to put religion in these schools they believe they can do it to the nation.

I was at one of the debates before this last election when we prevailed against the RW candidates and the Christianuts there at the meeting we mean and aggressive. The atmosphere was electric. Somehow we won that one during the general election in 2012.

When my wife and I were out yesterday and passed through the intersection of 80th and Wadsworth there were a number of students on the corner with signs. We did not know at that time that the curriculum change was afoot.

4. And state Democrats helped bring this on.

I, too, am a Jefferson County, Colorado resident.

Unfortunately, the Democrats in the state legislature decided to put a big tax hike for public education issue on the ballot in 2013. This brought out all of the anti-tax, anti-public education voters in an off-off-year election.

Consequently, the right-wing slate was easily elected.

More unfortunate is that we have only a five member school board for the largest school district in the state. That means that in the next school board election in 2015, we cannot change the majority on the board even if most of us wanted to.

So, we can get ready for a lot of controversy over the next few years.

Fundies have been doing this with school boards all over the country. There's usually a backlash when they reveal their real agenda.

Love the history tweets! Those are great. Humor is a great weapon against the fanatics.

All of this crap started down here three years ago. I truly hope that you have enough sane voters in JeffCo to vote these teabaggers out in the next election. Unfortunately, I think we have lost for good down here. We were looking at moving to Evergreen to get out of this godforsaken republican wet dream of a county but after the last JeffCo school board election I knew what was coming your way.

Best of luck to you all.

The Republican majority on the board of county commissioners for Jefferson County has appointed a right-wing public library board -- who has hired a Douglas County woman to be the library director.

So, we are also witnessing the dismantling of our once great Jefferson County Public Library system. The head administrator is an former Arapahoe County bureaucrat; the both of them are intent on privatizing as many library functions as possible and they are in full thrall of the 'market-based' theory of providing government services.

We are no longer library 'patrons' here in Jeffco, we are 'customers'.
They have discarded the whole resource collection and weeded any book that is too old (like published before 2000) or is too 'intellectual' (my word, but you probably can get what I mean).
They have outsourced book deliveries and cataloguing.
They are no longer hiring professional librarians.

The library changes are flying way low under the radar of most people, but it is also very important.

So, any Jefferson County readers here -- please vote for Democrat John Flerlage for County Commissioner in the next few weeks!

15. Um, that's happening in libraries all over

Librarians being replaced by para-professionals
Outsourcing cataloging, book-binding, preservation
Massive weeding of collections
Closing and consolidating branches

And the whole customer thing is happening too. It's part of a shift to user-centric services: treat your patrons like you would customers (though we don't actually call them customers, we're urged to treat them like they were customers, you know, with a smile, aim to please, leave them satisfied. etc.)

I don't know anything about your library board but the things you've mentioned so far aren't particularly nefarious. They're just libraries with limited resources struggling to adapt to a post-internet world.

8. Greetings Neighbor! Wheat Ridge here!

I had 2 kids graduate from Wheat Ridge H.S. in the last two years. I got an e-mail about a week ago from the Superintendent about 3 schools having to close because too many teachers called out sick. Nothing about the new "curriculum". Well as I found out yesterday the teachers weren't sick, they were protesting the new curriculum. Funny how there was no mention to the parents about a changing curriculum, in any of the weekly e-mails and phone calls I get from the school(still have one kid in online Virtual School).

I love the Jeffco schools and students. I have an autistic son and the kids at Wheat Ridge High were so good to him, they helped him, nurtured him, and they made him Prom King in his senior year. I have had 3 kids in Jeffco and out of all their teachers I can think of one I didn't like. Just one. I really hope the loonies don't screw up what is a great school district.

On edit: If you happen to have a kid who went to WRHS in the last 4 years, give them a hug for me, they are the best!

Because LOTS of people need to see what they are missing, eh?

Buncha well-meaning but full of hot air adults in schools have for years told people about "lifelong learning" and education is important yada, yada.

Cool.

Anytime is a good time for history, isn't it? Maybe some live actors or street theater folks take up the challenge of examining the past of that place, and the country, and ...?

Maybe big hot air balloons of the people they wish to hide, with handouts that describe them as "also being full of hot air".

They are just asking for it....
