George Zimmerman lived the good life when he stayed at a Miami hotel ahead of a February CNN interview. Zimmerman and his family racked up a $3,600 bill at the Ritz-Carlton, doing everything from emptying multiple minibars, taking 10 people out to dinner and having their clothes laundered, according to a new GQ profile about the family.
As Zimmerman's brother Michael tells it, CNN agree to pay for two hotel rooms for three nights, but initially refused to pay the $3,600 tab. In a panic, Michael Zimmerman tried to reach Dr. Drew Pinsky, whom he had met during an earlier interview. He was told Pinsky wasn't available to speak to him, but a producer for Pinsky's show was able to calm Michael Zimmerman down, and CNN eventually paid the bill.
The GQ piece paints a grim picture of the Zimmermans, who spent months moving from hotel to hotel, in fear for their lives, after George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin. They watched Argo to learn CIA tricks for staying under the radar.
According to GQ, George Zimmerman refused to take part in the profile on his family, because the magazine refused to put him up in a hotel like CNN did. CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the hotel bill.
