A lightning bolt strikes over downtown Oakland on April 12, 2012. From Damon Tighe: "Great storm over Oakland. Most of the bolts were at my back, but I was lucky to get one striking right where I was hoping it would: over downtown!"

(04-13) 17:32 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The thunderstorm that blew through the Bay Area Thursday night was one for the books - it shattered rainfall records in four cities and produced more lightning strikes than any storm in years.
All that rain pushed local precipitation totals closer to seasonal averages, percentage-wise, than they've been since a bone-dry December. It was accompanied by 750 lightning strikes across the Bay Area between 8 p.m. and midnight, said Chris Stumpf, a National Weather Service forecaster.
"That's quite a bit more than we've almost ever had, at least in recent memory," he said. "It's nice to mix things up."
Bolts hit the Transamerica Pyramid, towers on the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge, the giant container cranes at the Port of Oakland and an airplane that had just taken off from San Francisco International Airport for London. The plane turned back without incident.

(4,906 posts)heard a loud boom which awakened me..i didnt get up ... heard the thunder and rain and scooted further under the covers... this am there were two broken huge branches and i mean huge branches in my front yard which had fallen at least seventy five feet down and were right over my house..the branches missed the wires and my next door neighbors new car and somehow landed about fifteen feet from where they should have landed..just trashing my front fence and even broke the concrete footing under the fence. the neighbor to my right saw the lightning flash and heard the boom at the same time so he knew it struck close by..the neighbor to my left also was awakened by a loud boom..our assessment is that the tree was stuck by lightning. spooked me a bit as I've never seen lightning and thunder like that here in the monterey bay in the three plus decades i've been here..lucky it didnt fall on the house or do major damage...strange weather..and then today..torrential downpour with water like a an overflowing bathtub running off the roof..i've never seen anything like it..one hour later the sun was shining

(1,915 posts)Was visiting a friend, and by the time I was returning home it was pouring. Could barely see a short distance through the windshield even with the wipers at max speed. Almost felt as if I was back in the subcontinent, experiencing the monsoon.
I loved this! there is something really amazing and soothing about huge thunderstorms .
ps: awesome pics, especially the ones of the Golden gate bridge.
