Lindsey Graham May Just Jump in the 2016 Race
by Eddie Scarry | 2:31 pm, October 3rd, 2014 14
South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham (R) is one of the least popular Republicans in the conservative media but thats not going to stop him from throwing it out there that, hey, its possible he might run for president.
In an interview with The Weekly Standard on the re-emergence of war hawk voices within the GOP, in light of the current U.S. fight against the Islamic terrorist network ISIS, Graham throws it out there that if he wins reelection to the Senate this November, hell start looking into possibly running for president in 2016.
If I get through my general election, if nobody steps up in the presidential mix, if nobodys out there talkingme and McCain have been talkingI may just jump in to get to make these arguments, he said.
Then he lunged at his fellow Republican senator Marco Rubio, another potential 2016 contender.
Hes a good guy, but after doing immigration with himwe dont need another young guy not quite ready, Graham said. Hes no Obama by any means, but hes so afraid of the right, and Ive let that go.

(89,252 posts)there were a few other negative comments about him regarding a pres run .
usually a latino from a major swing state would be seen as a positive and you would have people pushing it. but in rubio's case he doesn't seem to have many people who like him.
even mccain who wasn't liked very much still had a few good friends like graham.

(15,429 posts)And it doesn't even matter whether or not Graham is actually gay (and I really don't give a shit one way or the other). It WILL become an issue in the GOP primary.
So all I have to say is, RUN LINDSEY RUN!!! You'll never be nominated, but you'll bring out the bigotted anti-LGBT vitriol and whichever candidate wins the nomination will have to join in on the dog-pile that will ensue in order to win that nomination.

Yes, the rest of the GOP will gleefully throw him under the clown car.

He's always pinged my gaydar, though I know next to nothing about his personal history or life, other than the fact that he's married to a female.

(9,126 posts)I'm not saying that is your intent, but it plays into the right wing smear campaign against LGBTQ candidates. Some people said that Obama was unelectable because he was black and the racists would outnumber those who would vote for him. Graham shouldn't win because he's a grifter and a charlatan, not because he is gay or straight.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)The only gay bashing that will go on if Lindsey Graham throws his hat into the ring will be coming from his fellow candidates.
And that's with Graham never coming out as gay (and really, nobody in the press or the GOP knows).
Edited to add, the GOP had 9 anti-LGBT planks in their 2012 national platform.
IF you don't believe me on how much anti-LGBT vitriol will be hurled if he actually runs, visit any right wing blog or forum and look for the discussion on the article in the OP.

(9,126 posts)I'm just surprised to see Democrats doing it. There are plenty of reasons to say why Graham is an awful candidate. Being gay or possibly gay is not one of them.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)As far as candidates go, he might actually be one of the better on the GOP side and would certainly stand a better chance in a national electoral contest than the likes of Ted Cruz.
But he will never be nominated and LGBT issues will be front and center should he decide to run because of the rumors that he is gay. That is a fact and is all I stated.

Can a candidate receive a salary from his or her campaign committee?
The candidate may receive a salary from his or her campaign committee only under the following conditions:
The salary must be paid by the principal campaign committee.
The salary must not exceed the lesser of the minimum annual salary for the federal office sought or what the candidate received as earned income in the previous year.
Individuals who elect to receive a salary from their campaign committees must provide income tax records and additional proof of earnings from relevant years upon request from the Commission.
Payments of salary from the committee must be made on a pro-rata basis (i.e., a candidate may not receive a whole year's salary if he or she is not a candidate for an entire 12-month period).
Incumbent federal officeholders may not receive a salary payment from campaign funds.
The first payment of salary shall be made no sooner than the filing deadline for access to the primary election ballot in the state in which the candidate is running for office.
Salary payments may continue until the date when the candidate is no longer considered a candidate for office or until the date of the general election or general election runoff. For special elections, payments may continue from the date that the special election is set until the date of the special election.

I thought double-dipping was one reason we have perpetual candidates.

(20,854 posts)Santorum and Newt both proved there are millions to be pulled in if the right batshit crazy billionaire jumps on your campaign. Herman Cain is still getting gigs due to his disastrous run. Palin doesn't even run and gets people handing money over by pretending to run. All these people care about is the cash their office brings them. Oh yes, these people will flock into the race so long as there is $$$$ to be made.
