Many computer users usually ignore terms of service or privacy policy documents, but they should pay attention to what the Windows 10 privacy policy has to say. The document reveals that Microsoft can collect and use voice information and even record text input for some applications, suggesting that Windows 10 can at any time send such data to the company without the user knowing what is happening.
We may collect information about your device and applications and use it for purposes such as determining or improving compatibility and use voice input features like speech-to-text, we may collect voice information and use it for purposes such as improving speech processing, the company says about voice data collection.
If you open a file, we may collect information about the file, the application used to open the file, and how long it takes any use [of] it for purposes such as improving performance, or [if you] enter text, we may collect typed characters, we may collect typed characters and use them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spellcheck features, Microsoft writes about this unexpected Windows 10 key-logging feature.
To further improve its upcoming desktop operating system, Microsoft says it may collect even more data about users. Microsoft collects information about you, your devices, applications and networks, and your use of those devices, applications and networks, the Windows 10 preview terms state. Examples of data we collect include your name, email address, preferences and interests; browsing, search and file history; phone call and SMS data; device configuration and sensor data; and application usage.

And yes it will be called Windows 10 not 9. If you don't believe me see here... http://bgr.com/2014/09/30/microsoft-windows-10-announced/

Does Microsoft really think that people will stand for this?? This is even stupider and more dangerous than what they tried to do for the XBox One gaming system. Who in their right mind would buy it knowing this? It's not even something they try to hush up, they're telling you they do this blatantly!

(11,916 posts)I'll be damned if I'm upgrading anything unless it's to move my work environment to Linux. Already changed out all my systems at home for Apples and have not subscribed to the cloud service.
Who in their right mind would ever try to do personal banking or shopping with that on there?

(27,677 posts)But I reccomend Linux Mint for new users as it's more ready to go out of the box. Just go to their website and download/make a boot disk. Even if you decide not to install it as an OS, it's a good idea to have a boot disk handy for recovering from Windows crashes.
It behaves a lot like Windows except there are new (open source) apps for everything. Like Open Office instead of MS Office and Gimp instead of Photoshop.
I love it. More specifically I love the open source philosophy. I'll never go back.

I keep forgetting that online Medical records are Windows supported.
Gotta bring that to the attention of my doc's office.
SO glad we use Linux at home.

(100,081 posts)Windows 8 was bad enough, this tracking shit has got to stop. And now that Steam is moving full on ahead with Steam OS and to Linux and Linux derivatives like Ubuntu and Debian, is there any reason for gamers to continue to use Microsoft?

(65,616 posts)I guess Win7 will be the last OS I use by windows. Shame, it works great. I refuse to by the POS Windows 8 (since it doesn't work) and will not be switching over to Big Brother 10.

(11,916 posts)The programmers all run Ubuntu. I'm a Sublime text user, but I use it in Vi mode The youngsters around here aren't interested in that. They use Pico only when made to for certain edits or fetch the files down, edit, then ftp back up to the server.
I would be happy as a clam to just to back to straight Vi or using gVim. I'll take inventory, but I don't think there is a single thing I use in my daily web mockups/testing that would keep me from going to Linux during the next upgrade. Unless, of course, they decided to pull stupid shit like Microsoft.

(65,616 posts)Everyone wants the fastest OS windows makes and that is Windows 7 Ultimate. I've come to HATE HATE HATE Windows 8. Also, if you buy a new HP workstation - be prepared to NOT be able to go back to Win7...they don't make drivers for it for these new workstations coming out! Straight up extortion IMO.
It makes me SICK that the entire industry does whatever Bill Gates wants them to!

(1,375 posts)By installing it now you're basically volunteering to test the product for Microsoft and they need to collect that data to find bugs and develop a stable product for commercial release.

(2,943 posts)Although, Beta testing was up to the user to report issues for a long time. Some of the Beta testers I have met did not have training in how computers actually work, more-or-less the vocabulary. It was always a wonder if Microsoft was using bad information to iron out the bugs in their software. Of course, one should never use beta software on their primary computer, it will crash, it is without a question...

(18,421 posts)Just couldn't find peripheral drivers and such at the time. Vista crashed much more. (Which isn't saying much!)
mrdmk
(2,943 posts)Vista was rolled out before it was ready for primetime. Win 7 was the fix for Vista and needed to be treated as such. Win 8 was a major interface upgrade for a population that knew how to use a computer. Microsoft believes they can reinvent the computer market on all platforms that use a microprocessor. They also believe we need the same interface with the same restrictions across all platforms. Microsoft needs to recheck their marketing strategy. Having the same interface across all platforms is a joke..
No one wanted a desktop sized iPad

(1,569 posts)If you don't want to be a TESTER whose every move is watched don't install the free technical preview.

(2,805 posts)But I will say that during install you are given lots of choices as to how much data you are sharing. Unfortunately, those screens only relate to the final release, this technical release obviously sweeps up a lot of information without specifically warning you during install. The email collection is particularly disturbing. It is rather difficult to figure out how to create a local account during install rather than automatically hooking into your Windows Live account.
All that said, as someone who didn't bother to get used to Win8 or 8.1, this version 10 at first glance on a desktop has a lot better chance of wide acceptance. I can see it being very serviceable for businesses that need to update their OS without having to worry about their employees being completely unable to navigate as they would have been with win8.
I may actually give these a couple days of testing--minus visits to any fetish porn sites

(15,512 posts)which seems dedicated to the mistaken notion that PCs are iPads and people mainly use their desktops as gigantic smart phones? Hmm. If they use any of the data they collect to actually improve their products I'd be surprised.

(18,585 posts)Note it doesn't say the data is being sent back to Redmond, just used to improve things like spellcheck and voice recognition.
