Ebola outbreak: 'No risk' for Dallas deputy

There's "no risk of Ebola" for a Dallas deputy who was hospitalized with possible symptoms of the virus, a Texas health official said Wednesday.

The deputy, named by local media as Sgt. Michael Monnig, didn't have any direct contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, the man who died of Ebola in Dallas on Wednesday.

"We know he didn't have direct contact with the patient (Duncan) and he doesn't have a fever, and in a situation like that there is no risk of Ebola," said Chris Van Deusen, spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The patient -- who was transported from Frisco, Texas -- had reported being in the Dallas apartment where Duncan had been staying and having "some contact" with Duncan's family members, Frisco Fire Chief Mark Piland told reporters.

Monnig was a first responder and had spent about 30 minutes in the apartment, his son told CNN affiliate KTVT. He woke up Wednesday, feeling sore and fatigued and with a stomachache.

"With the situation, what's happened, he just decided it would be better to be safe than sorry," Logan Monnig told KTVT.

The family does not expect that Monnig has Ebola, but still, his son said, "we're kind of scared and just want to make sure he's OK."

No direct contact with anyone infected with Ebola and no fever. This was nothing more than media (and DU) hype. I don't begrudge the man for being careful and cautious. I do, however, look forward to 10 days form now when (knock on wood) Dallas will be declared Ebola-free.

1. Let's hope that this indeed pans out.

I do remain cautious, however, as it IS theorectically possible that he still may have come into contact with contaminants, somehow, but indeed, let's hope that this truly was nothing more than a coincidence(it IS flu season, after all.).

9. I get that people shouldn't be too cavalier about Ebola

But how does sowing cynicism and mistrust about government help things? Most people are probably more afraid than not about Ebola. Running around saying that the CDC is lying to us or acting like they are misguided or ill informed is only going to provoke more unnecessary anxiety and prevent people from seeking help and information. Do we want people listening to the CDC or Fox?

5. I had read they suspect the flu is to blame earlier.

Hopefully that will turn out to be the case here. There's going to be more scares before it's over, but in this case I'm not overly concerned at the moment. As if it would matter if I were or not. Dallas handled this one well. The media I'm not so pleased with right now.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

6. We are through the most critical period.

This strain incubates for 7-10 days in most people. Not to say someone couldn't show symptoms up to the 21 day point, but no one has yet and that is a good thing. Not the family he was staying with and not the first responders. Today is Day 10 since Duncan's isolation and day 14 since he started showing symptoms.

Each day that passes with no one (particularly his family and the paramedics) the window closes a little more on the Ebola in the US story (Oct. 19 is the 21 day mark), Until the next one, which will most likely be stopped at patient zero.

7. We learned a lot from Mr Duncan's case.

Not to detract from the sadness of his loss, but we did learn, as a nation, how to better manage possible contagions such as Ebola. If anything I think now we're a bit overly cautious, which isn't a bad thing necessarily at the moment, but it's going to lead to many more false possible cases. We all just need to keep our wits about us when these are being reported. We can't have it both ways. Either our medical community is overly zealous, or the risk sending people home who may be infected. That's just reality.

I will say it will make my heart happy when/if his closest loved ones here pass the 21 day mark. They've all been through enough fear and loss already. My hope is they're given that bit of reprieve. Each day they're closer to knowing, for sure, they're going to be alright. I can't imagine all their emotions today after his passing. They've been in my heart often today and I wish them all the best in the future.

Although it might behoove them to wait until the test results come back negative before making statements implying certainty.

Since the person has no fever, it seems quite unlikely that Ebola is involved.

Today or tomorrow, I expect him to be released with a clean bill of health. I hope he has good health insurance, because there will also be another bill.

However, you're right. There will be people panicking over symptoms, even where no Ebola cases have appeared. I imagine the ERs are discussing this and trying to figure out a strategy to deal with people coming in with the flu.
