(67,108 posts)thing I find really unsettling are earthquakes.
Be safe!!!
Pachamama
(16,887 posts)Thru earthquakes than in Tornado country or Hurricane country. But especially Tornados. Those are bad-ass scarier than anything and the destruction in my opinion, far worse. I live in a house we constructed in 2007 after suffering a devastating flood. This sucker is built to the highest structural standards. It is elevated 3 ft above the highest ever recorded flood level. We decided to opt for a solid concrete with rebar reinforced foundation with piers and footings and lateral support across that has then the house bolted in to rods that were put in concrete at pour. They bolt into steel sheer walls throughout. Its wood framing but our structural engineer made this house to be the last one standing in a 9.0. Its a friggin fortress against a flood or earthquake. But a Tornado? That could rip this house apart leaving the bolted steel frames on the concrete!!!! I guess the only thing that I have if California ever gets hit with Tornados (and who knows with the changing weather intensities and patterns in the world) is we have a full basement encased in that concrete foundation and we could hide down in that sucker and survive if a big F5 decided to suck our house with it. That is scary. Id take a 8.0+ over that anyday....
Sending lots of good thoughts and protection to all those caught in basements and cellars right now and hoping you are all safe.....

(67,108 posts)sure to occur. It's pretty hard to tornado-proof a house. I would far rather deal I think with a hurricane. What you've done for earthquake-proofing your house is incredible!

(29,674 posts)It's supposed to hit the KC metro after midnight, so me and mine will possibly be in a similar predicament come one am or so.

(67,108 posts)to the basement quickly. I'm not looking forward to this at all after midnight. I'll take a bad snowstorm any day.

(29,674 posts)Everything else is already in the basement. We still have an old-fashioned outdoor entrance so that'll be fun at two am.
Notice how after Joplin people are taking the storms seriously?
I just heard on Channel 9 Brian Busby stated that the damage towards Wichita was catastrophic, with three inch hail and a tornado on the ground nearing McConnell AFB. They also just said that 1300 people in Platte Co now have no power.

(31,997 posts)and you just feel so helpless then you just take cover and pray to survive it. If you get out without damage you feel good, but then you worry about your friends/family and feel horrible/guilty that you sustained no damage and others took direct hits
