I Am Thinking Of Firing Comcast.....Question

Does anyone here have experience with those HD antenna/receivers that attach to the back of the flat screen and get you some of those cable channels for free that you pay for on your cable channel.

I will keep my broadband so I can stream.

I live near Seattle.

Thanks

we have friends who have had great success with over-the-air digital... even pretty far out from ATL. the only ones i know are those that actually have an outdoor antenna, though.

i am fairly happy and i have a mix of DirecTV and Comcast in my home... both of them seem pretty ok to me even though in most cases the customer service is horrid.

will jerk your broadband fee up to $70-$100/month, or more, if you go internet-only.

There are too many monopolies in the market today.

(you don't mean Hulu or Roku, etc, do you? I don't have them)

and they told me that it was completely impossible. I went up three levels in CS calls and every single person told me that I could not cancel my other services completely and have only broadband. Not at any price. I despise Comcast, but they are my only resource for fast internet where I live, and I need that for my business. Grrr.

based on your address... it even tells you what you can pick up with a small internal antenna, an attic one and one one the roof.

They pulled all sorts of shenanigans, from not wanting to give me the package I chose and saying it "wasn't available in my area", then saying I couldn't even keep my current deal. I had to threaten to cancel to get the woman to actually look at the Double Play packages. Then they said there'd be a $40 installation fee, and instead tried to charge me $80.

Then the tech barely tapped at my door to avoid one last service call at 7 PM, claimed I wasn't home, when I'd been home and listening for a knock since 4:30 and had the porch-light on. But they still hadn't turned off my modem so I plugged it in and it started working. So I was willing to wait another 5 days to have them come out to activate the TV stuff. I only stream TV from them right now, because I can't afford a TV, and he had it working on his tester TV but I bet it's going to be another nightmare to get my TV working when I get it next month.

-----

My neighbor had an antenna for her digital receiver in the same building, and is getting 42 channels or so.

However, Comcast here charges 63.95 for internet-only 50mb down, plus $8 a month for modem rental. I had a plan with 45 channels and 50 mbs down before that the total was $61 after taxes and fees, since I had my own modem. You might find a small double play available that is cheaper than the 50 mb down alone.

My life is much better for that. I don't see any video advertisements but what's posted her on DU; commercials like the LGBT friendly Cheerios ads or movie trailers.

Our television plays movies. That's all it does. I have a homemade HD antenna that works very well. We receive all the networks including several PBS channels and a number of local channels. (The more powerful stations don't require any more antenna than a bit of wire dangling from the antenna jack.) But we are entirely out of the habit of watching broadcast television. Last time I tried, more than a year ago, the advertising was super-annoying.

The only big deal for most people seems to be sports. My wife and I are not big sports fans so that's not a concern.

Our internet is a moderate speed DSL connection from a local provider. It's now "in association" with AT&T but it started out as a simple twisted wire pair direct to the provider. That's the only telecommunication service we have when I'm not playing with radios.

The antenna works better during the day, but I don't watch network programming at night anyway. I much prefer finding movies and shows on Roku. I gave up cable a couple of years ago.

I live far away from the tv signals and everyone said I wouldn't get anything on an antenna. I live up on a mountain and thought I would try the clearstream V2 antenna. I has "up to" 50 mile range. I figured if it didn't work I would return it. Nothing to lose.
Lo and behold I got around 10 channels including the networks and the antenna is string on top of a curio in my living room. i kick myself in the ass for not doing it sooner.
We also have a roku and netflix.

we relocated to NE Tenn (unfortunately, lol) anyways Comcast was charging over 200.00 for basic service bcs they have monopolies in small regional areas here.

Also, when we cancelled their service, they sent a kid to the house to "collect the box" and charge us 60.00 ("collection fee&quot !!!! I reported them to FCC. Horrible customer service.

Direct Tv is still cheaper (9 years later). Internet via Comcast was also horrific customer service, will never use them again.

Some cable companies, imo really think consumers will put up with this. It's sad bcs in the southeast people are passive and don't complain enough.

I haven't even discussed Embarq/CenturyLink
