Mitt Romney: Mothers Should Be Required To Work Outside Home Or Lose Benefits

WASHINGTON -- Women who stay at home to raise their children should be given federal assistance for child care so that they can enter the job market and "have the dignity of work," Mitt Romney said in January, undercutting the sense of extreme umbrage he showed when Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen quipped last week that Ann Romney had not "worked a day in her life."

The remark, made to a Manchester, N.H., audience, was unearthed by MSNBC's "Up w/Chris Hayes," and will air during the 8 a.m. hour of his show Sunday.

Ann Romney and her husband's campaign fired back hard at Rosen following her remark. "I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work," Romney said on Twitter.

Mitt Romney, however, judging by his January remark, views stay-at-home moms who are supported by federal assistance much differently than those backed by hundreds of millions in private equity income. Poor women, he said, shouldn't be given a choice, but instead should be required to work outside the home to receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits. "[E]ven if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work," Romney said of moms on TANF.

This opens a much needed discussion about the lack of choices that parents face regarding the raising of their children. The flat wages for the past 30+ years have created an environment in which no choice exists.

But I did hear the remark about it not making sense for a woman to work for $9.00 an hour, and pay $9.50 an hour for child care.

I've been making the point for years, that we need to open some "government" financed child-care agencies, and make Welfare into Workfare. Obviously it isn't going to work leaving kids at home, or with an inattentive relative if you've got one, or any sort of inconsistent child care. I remember a story a few years back, I think in one of Moore's movies, where a woman's child was dropped off with an uncle, so she could ride a bus to work 50 miles away. The child found a gun, and shot himself accidentally.

And you can hire people doing it that don't have jobs too, so it's win-win. A certain number of people who need jobs, can be hired to facilitate it, perhaps as transportation too. There is plenty of wealth in this country to make these things happen, if only we have the will to actually give people an equal chance, we're going to find some real jewels of employees out there.

and IF that day care will return her kid(s) alive and well reliably every single day and IF she can find a job with adequate pay and benefits so she can cover shelter, clothing, food, and dental care and IF...

Men want it all both ways. They want a woman to take care of the kids and house and they don't want her to get a dime for it. However, when they flake out and she's got to go scratch for a living, they don't want to make services available for her to do so and they sure as hell don't want her to make a living wage, or she'd have left their sorry asses ten years sooner.

My ex was a mensch even if he was a faithless alcoholic and supported me through nursing school, my ticket out. For my part, I took only the equity in the house and things he had no use for like my looms and fiber. I left him a furnished house full of small appliances, his power tools, and even art on the walls. I left him in great shape, in other words, while I started over from scratch.

However, I'd been told it was a bad idea to try to breed so I didn't. Dialysis at 30 sounded like a lousy time.

However, I've watched too many friends and acquaintances who were left with nothing when hubby followed his dick out of the marriage. I know what women go through when they're kicked to the curb with kids to feed.

whom they have almost completely alienated.

They think Rosen's comments were their opening to "reach out to the ladies."

They're stupid.

Every woman with a brain cell knows Ann Romney is a spoiled, rich, non-working, nanny-using, never-worked-a-day-in-her-life TOOL.

This fake outrage is disgusting. And now to hear Romney's true thoughts on stay-at-home moms just raises the disgust level.

Their desperation to appeal to women is amusing, however. They could have tried treating women like human beings, rather than using OUR bodies to prove their "morality."

Let's hope the campaign makes use of the gifts he's given them.

If you're rich and chose to stay home, you "chose motherhood " (Ann Romney's words). She implies that those of us (i.e., the vast majority of women) who hold down jobs BECAUSE we chose motherhood didn't really choose motherhood at all. We're just selfish bitches because, you know, we're holding down an underpaid job to put food on the table.

And ask any Repuke: welfare queens need to work--even if that job does not even cover the cost of childcare. What? The welfare queen is already "working"? Don't be ridiculous. How many dressage horse could she possibly have?!

This may make a good sound bite when talking to the faithful but what are the realities.

Where, for instance, will these jobs come from. In many if not most of the cases the only reason these women aren't already working is because work is not available so you can huff and puff all you want but when no work is available there is no way this can work. This is just another case where Romney is recklessly out of touch with reality.
