At one time, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins may have viewed Fox News as a friendly venue for his campaign against marriage equality. But on Sunday, he found himself in the minority even on the conservative network.
Following the Supreme Courts decision last week not to hear appeals against rulings that struck down same-sex marriage bans in five states, Fox News Sunday invited Perkins and conservative attorney Ted Olson to debate the issue.
Marriage is not to affirm adults, its for the protection of children, Perkins argued. And if love is the only factor, where do you draw the boundaries?
Olson, who argued in favor of marriage equality before the Supreme Court last year, noted that the court had said that the thousands of children in same-sex households also mattered.
They deserve the right to equality, and the same respect and decency that other people have that are living right next door, Olson noted.

(15,383 posts)That it's not worth trying to use against democrats as the only people against marriage equality these days are people that are in the republican camp who weren't going anywhere to begin with, and they'd like Perkins and others to just stfu.

(21,020 posts)Then I hope he's spending just as much time and energy on blasting heterosexuals who live together and have children without being married. Also, what about heterosexuals who run around having whole families of kids with multiple fathers, or mothers, as the case may be.
Also, if marriage is for the protection of children, does that mean that older couples and people who are functionally sterile shouldn't get married?
ugh. The man is an idiot.

(82,849 posts)I'll give three examples where I think our nation's priorities are set by Fox News, despite what polls show the citizenry cares about. First, global climate change. Despite the overwhelming evidence of scientific research, the public is remarkably divided on whether there is any human contribution to the changes we're seeing in the global climate. Where is Fox News on global climate change? Firmly in the denialist camp.
Second, ebola. While it's still pretty early in this game, the public seems quite panicked that they are at high risk for contracting ebola, signing on to a plethora of conservative nostrums to solve a problem that really doesn't exist. Fox News is on 24-7, pumping up the panic, obscuring the facts, and blasting nonsense that even seeps into the other media outlets. I note with approval the statement over the weekend from the National Institutes of Health that they are behind the ebola curve because their funding has been cut. Will there now be an unintended side effect of the public getting behind government spending on such things as disease research? This one could still go either way, but it's undeniable that the public's reaction is out of proportion to the current threat level.
Third, same sex marriage. Fox News pumped this issue for all it was worth for a long time, but now it seems to have retired from the field. Can you imagine Tony Perkins getting any pushback at all from Fox even three years ago? With Fox walking away from the losing battle, it seems that marriage equality is the near future of marriage in the United States.
Counter-examples to show that Fox doesn't set our national priorities?
