(6,843 posts)Columbus day was made a national holiday as a token by politicians to make up for 50 years of Italian-American persecution in this country. It is really NOT about Columbus. Italians were NOT considered white in this country
Did you know:
- Italians were routinely lynched in the south until as late as 1945?
- Italian Americans were put in interment camps in WWII?
- Congress passed a law to prohibit Italians from immigrating to America?
- Most of us lost our language because speaking Italian was deemed "The Language of the Enemy"
- Even today, think of all of the negative Italian stereotypes portrayed on tv - womanizers, mafia, ndrangheta, greasy hair, etc.
- Anti Columbus day has been around a long time. It was first opposed because of the Knights of Columbus and the Protestant opposition to the Catholic Church.
And it was not just the Daughters of the Mayflower crowd doing this. Many Irish and German immigrants (who came a generation earlier) were extremely prejudiced against Italians and their immigration.
