That was her post on Facebook. I saw all of the people post the typical I hate Obama, I hate Obamacare crap that goes around for all of these things. So, I decided to give her actual information. I pulled up healthcare.gov and I found a plan that cost her $50 a month. Because of the horrible things said on her page, she was actually thinking that she may not even get insurance. After I pointed her in the right direction I think she may be able to get a much better plan for a lot cheaper. Oh and she has a young son (under a year old). Here in Florida he is eligible for the CHIP program. Again something she didn't know because of all of the clutter from the non-informeds who just love to give false info to justify their way of thinking.

(92,206 posts)The ACA is far from perfect, and there are some whose premiums hurt. Primarily if one is slightly above the income level for a subsidy and you are over 55 but less than 65
But there are more positives than negatives, and frankly it was the only thing that could get through congress at the time

Was there any reason she couldn't read up about the law herself? Does she not have a computer? Phone? Did she just believe everything she saw or heard on Facebook?
Not trying to be snarky here. I understand the ACA is confusing for many people (myself included ), but I have tried to read up about it as much as I can. Still have a lot to read and learn about the law, but at least I am trying.

(45,274 posts)because of what the trolls tell them. They don't bother, or lack the skills, to find things out for themselves. I think it's sort of a civic duty to educate them, preferably (eventually) to the point that they can continue learning on their own. It is far better and more productive to teach them than to demean them. Since the schools and the media are, arguably deliberately, failing them in this regard, the only way we can end up with a halfway informed citizenry is to do it ourselves.

(28,798 posts)media matters posts usually yield a few. then i go back and see sane people responding to posts i can't see and for some strange reason it makes me feel happy.

(460 posts)When you can do a little research and find facts to help someone it is a wonderful feeling. There is so much misinformation going around that it is hard to pick out the few kernels of truth from all the chaff. It is getting as bad as sitting in the corner bar-everyone is an expert, and everyone has a "good friend" who told them the "real" facts. Most of it is just bar talk and bull shit. Find out the real facts for yourself. It is a powerful feeling, and you can help a lot of people. You are a true friend. She is lucky that you care for her. I hope that she can find affordable coverage that works for her family.

(34,661 posts)finding the real source of information. If you run a Google search and are not familiar with and how items are listed, one will and could get very frustrated, and may tend to follow someone with some information rightly or wrongly. Nevada has some real issues with ACA and that is due to lack of funding. Fortunately we have many non profit services that will help anyone who needs insurance and walk them through all the hoops. Seems that the Red States really hate their citizens, and they do anything and everything possible to a screw them over. Noticed the TeaBillies seem to be the real road block for people trying to make heads or tales out of ACA. With all the take personal responsibility bullshit thrown out there, what do you expect.

(6,261 posts)I deducted $12,000 of out of pocket medical expenses this year, including premiums and virtually every medical expense that the insurance didn't feel like paying.
Don't tell me we couldn't do better.

(15,139 posts)qualify for Cobra, it's impossible to get reasonably priced insurance for 18 months after becoming unemployed. I have a family member whose unemployment benefits ran out after 26 weeks. He has no income and is being dinged $450 a month for really lousy insurance that pays for practically nothing.. One night in the ER recently cost him out of pocket $4300.00.
You are right. We can and should do better.

(18,998 posts)I don't know or care because I am on Medicare and even that costs me twice that much.
Just getting a plan no matter how worthless it is is not much help.
This whole thing could have been solved by allowing anyone to buy into Medicare...but the insurance industry does not get a 30% cut of that.
