The first few paragraphs of Charlie Crist's book The Party's Over are like he is looking back at his GOP days and not liking the image he saw.
First the fan at the DNC 2012.
A small fan was whirring at my feet. I always like a fan at the podium when I give a big speech. You have no idea how hot those TV lights can be. But I could still feel tiny beads of sweat forming on my forehead. I dont usually get nervous giving speeches. My heart was pumping now.
More from the book:
An excerpt from Charlie Crists The Partys Over
Id been the low‑tax, pro‑life, pro‑ gun Republican governor of Florida. As a young state senator, Id been such an anti‑crime crusader, people called me Chain Gang Charlieand I considered it a compliment. Heck, Id named my boat Freedom. Was that Republicanor what? Id risen through the ranks from education commissioner to attorney general to governor, always running with an R next to my name. In the 2008 presidential campaign, Id worked diligently for John McCain, even making his short list for vice president. At various points along the way, I had referred to myself as a Ronald Reagan Republican.
And here I was with a prime‑time, Thursday‑night speaking role at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, preparing to sing the praises of Barack Hussein Obama. Thats how many of my old party mates liked referring to him, as if he werent just a president from a different party but a highly suspect, otherworldly creature and probably a Muslim too.
....I was addressing this Democratic crowd the same night the president was. My slot was after Caroline Kennedy and just before John Kerry and Joe Biden. The big addresses from Michelle and Barack Obama were coming right after that. Youd have to look long and hard in the annals of American politics to find a fish more out of water than I was that night.
He speaks about how many of his friends were telling him he was really a Democrat at heart. He speaks about the new direction of his party.
I had this notion about bringing our bipartisan Florida values to Washington. It was just about then that a band of crazy extremists hijacked the party Id grown up in. Pedal to the metal, they drove it off an ideological cliff. I got banged up riding with these unsavory characters. But thankfully, I leapt to safety just in time. Now Im happier than Ive ever been and feeling thoroughly at home.
Someone in a post yesterday said I was hero-worshipping. No, that is not true. I am exercising common sense in a situation that could forever damage my state.

(30,481 posts)You are reading something that isn't there. This is a move to the right for our party. We are about to elect a someone who helped Bush get into office. Someone who worked his ass of to help McCain/Palin. Once again, he is better than Scott. Not by much on education if you look at his past actions. Pretty words he is using these days though.

(30,481 posts)I am under the assumption you are aware of his past actions. He follows Jebs lead on education. I do think he will do a better job overseeing the privatization than Scott. With Scott there is not accountability. I think Crist will at least keep an eye on the money as he gives them more an more.

(88,117 posts)He vetoed a bill that was pushed by Jeb that would have hurt teachers.

(30,481 posts)I even mentioned it up thread. The Florida legislature is so screwed up that even Scott has vetoed some of their bills. You should find a different metric to use. He will in no way be more fair to teachers than the Obama administration. You have just made a claim you cannot back up in any way. Crist has been about privatization since it first crossed his mentor Jeb Bushs lips. I get that you have a thing for Obama. Much of it is understood. But to claim that a right winger like Crist would be better than Obama to teachers is a joke. At a minimum they will both be the same with respect to education policy. After all, Crist will do whatever Jeb says on education and it appears Jeb is an Arne kind of guy.

(43,191 posts)Even with all his failings and flip flops, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to vote for Crist, just because how incredibly awful and horrifically depressing the alternative is.

(30,481 posts)I just can't stand the cleaning up of his very recent history as if he is now some good guy. The promotion of Crist by the state party has hurt our state.

(43,191 posts)Yeah, we've got to muster some enthusiasm for a flawed candidate, just to get people out to the polls.
We're running against the dreaded alternative, and we need all the excitement we can get.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)Very few are going to be excited about him and lying about who he is isn't going to help. Not saying you are lying, you are not. I also understand your point. I am just of the opinion that posts on du do not elicit excitement with the electorate. Therefore, I would rather keep it honest here at du. This is what the new democratic party of Florida is bringing us.

(14,449 posts)We're talking two years ago he changed. Not long enough. We're not talking Elizath Warren who changed almost 20 years ago. That is acceptable. Charlie come back in 2034 and we can talk. I hate Election Day already. To think I don't have a choice on the Florida governor. So sad

(88,117 posts)In his new book, The Party's Over: How The Extreme Right Hijacked the GOP and I Became a Democrat, Crist details his political evolution from "Chain Gang Charlie" to the politician invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention a decade later.
Several juicy excerpts have already been blogged about in various publications. One of the most interesting chapters is devoted to Rick Scott, the man who succeeded him in Tallahassee and who Crist hopes to replace in November. It begins this way:Rick Scott didn't only bring a new administration to Tallahassee on January 4, 2011. He also arrived with a wrecking ball. He'd barely unpacked his toothbrush and his custom-made, Florida-seal cowboy boots when he got busy knocking down some of our proudest achievements. Rolling back consumer protections. Reversing the progress on voting rights. Signaling to the oil drillers, utilities and insurance companies that Florida was open season again. In Tallahassee, the whole tone changed. The bipartisanship that had been such a hallmark of the past four years evaporated with the first morning dew. Democrats were still welcome to their opinion but no one in power had any interest in listening to them. Teachers, minorities, women's groups, and anyone else suspected of being even faintly Democratic they were back on the please-don't-bother-us-list.
