Here it is, mid-October, and their pediatrician STILL doesn't have enough flu vaccine to schedule a flu clinic.
I'm supposed to call back every day.

(12,081 posts)stayed home for one day of it, and during none of it did he have a fever. I find it odd that people try to avoid any and all danger and illness. It's all well and good to be careful, but is just simply isn't possible to avoid any and all danger and illness.

(28,876 posts)And I agree. Still, if they the ped doesn't have them in another week...
I'm certain the drug stores won't do the baby, but maybe the toddler.

(51,666 posts)nothing about this stuff. Hell, I'm not even competent at changing a diaper.

(5,909 posts)We all got ours the end of September. Some people were like, that's early...I had read up on and it's not, plus it takes a couple weeks to activate.
Good luck!

(17,600 posts)If everyone else in the house has had their shot and the baby stays at home, you should be fine. Still recommended that they get the shot when it's available, but just saying that everyone else in the house having the shot does give them some protection.
I'm presuming Mom and Dad have already gotten their shots.

(1,045 posts)I just found several urgent cares in my area that do walk-ins for ped flu-shots. Maybe try that?

(16,382 posts)Some physicians advise their patients to wait until mid-November to get immunized anyway so the protection will last longer into the spring. Obviously, you wouldn't want your children around sick-looking people at any time, but for another week or two you should be fine. As always, good hand washing.

(2,795 posts)Back in the 2002-2003 flu season when there was a genetic shift in the virus and all these toddlers and young children were dying, I got one vaccine for my less than one year old twins at the health dept and the booster at the grocery store pharmacy. Turns out that vaccine provided no protection for the genetic shifted virus. But I was desperate to find the vaccine because the doctors didn't know at the time. That's how I got them.

(32,062 posts)but it is early here for flu. I know this because my kids have had viruses (they are both school-aged so not quite as worrisome as the 8-month old you have) so I have taken them in recently and was able to get them flu mist and directions for treating the colds/viruses that are going around. If you use daycare it is going to be hard to avoid. I remember the pediatrician telling me that you either go through it the first year of life with daycare or in kinder (getting all the colds etc). For many viruses there is no vaccine - you treat with OTC Tylenol, lots of fluids and rest. I wish I could promise you they won't get sick but history tells me otherwise. Hang in there.
