(18,402 posts)Other hospitals are gearing up for biocontainment. This from yesterday in Chicago:
The volunteers are first being trained on how to use the designated protective equipment, most of which exceeds CDC recommendations.
Waterproof gowns, leggings that are waterproof, a waterproof hood that covers the entire head, a visor that covers the opening of the face and a procedure mask, Infectious disease expert Dr. John Segreti said.
On Thursday, infection control experts watched as volunteers were drilled on how to put on the protective equipment, and, arguably the most hazardous part of the process, how to get of that gear.
The hospital is also building out a portion of their ICU so it will have biocontainment capacity similar to what the CDC possesses.
Though there havent been any cases of Ebola in Chicago so far, the citys health officials say theyre taking extra precautions.

Rush University Medical Center is 2.5 miles from my house--so even though I could walk it on a nice day if I were well, I couldn't walk there if I had ebola. I probably couldn't walk 2.5 blocks if I had ebola.

(146,316 posts)The major hospitals here in the Twin Cities are all set up to accept Ebola patients. The latest strategy has been a training program for other hospital ER staffs and deals with getting those with possible Ebola to one of the hospitals that is set up for treating them. Everyone's rehearsing this stuff and getting ready, just in case. We have 30,000 Liberian immigrants here, and there is travel between the affected countries and the Twin Cities, although not a lot just now.
I can't imagine that I will need any of those services, though.

(51,666 posts)There is a smaller hospital 4 blocks from my home I could walk to, but they are part of Providence and maybe run by catholics so who knows what sort of preps they have done.
I think here in CA training is mandatory under CalOSHA rules.

Most of them are academic med centers, the primary teaching hospitals for many of the state's medical schools.
