How powerful should a rich person be?

One of the things that makes democracies societies that people want to live in is that they deliberately give some power and influence to people who don't necessarily have a lot to begin with. More people have a say in how things should be, how the government should treat its citizens, so that more people are satisfied.

Key changes in the way that we govern ourselves in the last 40 years have led to a vicious cycle, where the rich and powerful can use the levers of power to make themselves more rich and powerful . . . the wishes of the masses be damned. There would seem to be no end to how wealthy and powerful the influential people can make themselves, at the expense of the rest of us, given the way the laws are set up, and the likely changes that are still to come to our laws due to future influence of the rich and powerful. Wealth and power gets concentrated in the hands of the few, leaving the rest of us in a system that doesn't respond to what we would hope for.

My question is - what actions taken by a rich and powerful person (your social superior) would a modern American conservative object to? Are there limits to what they think a rich and powerful person should be able to get away with or are there no limits? For example, would conservatives in this country think an influential person in the United States be able to

1. Murder an average person and get away with it, with just a slap on the wrist?
2. Start a war using the armed forces of the United States which would enrich themselves?
3. Re-write the laws so that they are able to legally defraud average people?
4. Steal thousands of dollars from average citizens with no recourse?
5. Pollute and poison an entire region's drinking water, if it enriches them?
6. Steal millions of tax payer dollars, and be rewarded with more power and influence?

Are there any limits to what a person should be able to get away with, just because they are wealthy and powerful? Or is the sky the limit?

I'm having trouble thinking of a heinous action that actually isn't possible in the US today that the elite _can't_ engage in, thanks to their positions.

I cross posted this at Discussionist, to see if I could get conservatives to answer, but I'm interested in what people at DU have to say about the limits of wealth and power as well.

I think no one, regardless of their wealth and power, should be able to get away with your examples, but they do, all the time.

i find it mind blowing. When any thing is done to try to curb any of these behaviors, conservatives pitch a f*ing fit.

Conservatives think being rich is proof god favours you and therefore, you should be able to do anything at all.
