About seven months ago, I asked a few DU members about their experiences with e-cigarettes. Most of those who had used them recommended them. So I tried a cheapie disposable (disgusting and lasted about six hours) and it proved that it could work for me. I ordered myself a Tornado V3 kit and some liquid the next day. That was the beginning of April.
Overnight, my 50 a day dropped to 5. Over the next week or so, I cut out the remaining five. April 23rd, I levered myself out of bed, went to pick up my baccy tin and lighter and thought "no, let's see if I can do without".
I haven't smoked a single cigarette since that day. My liquids still have nicotine (although that's slowly going down as well) but I've gone from 3000+ toxins and sucking concentrated smoke into my lungs, to one toxin and huffing flavoured steam. Perfect? No, but much, much better. My breathing is much easier, my sense of smell and taste are back (I hadn't realised how much hot sauce I was putting on everything!), I no longer have to worry about the effect of my smoke on my SO and cats, my SO is overjoyed and my cats much prefer the smell of cinnamon and cherries over the smell of stinky tobacco smoke.
Six months. No smoke. No tar. Just nicotine and a few nice flavours. E-cigs help people quit and I've taken to suggesting them to everyone who's having problems quitting the smokes.
Thank you to every DUer who encouraged me to try this. And Kat, Lily and Cracker thank you too.

(19,877 posts)I responded by saying I know about 10 people who quit by vaping. Doctors should be encouraging this as a way to quit smoking. Keep up the greatness.

(9,796 posts)Here, you can get smoking cessation aids for teh cost of a prescription fee (about $12). The NHS has been looking into the logistics of adding ecigs and liquid to it's smoking cessation aids. My own doctor, having seen the success of myself and a couple of others, now is recommending them to people having problems quitting (which is most people who try and quit).

(24,774 posts)It really is fun vaping because of the plethora of flavors and the fact that we're "cheating" by getting our nic fixes without all the toxins getting in the lungs, with good taste as a benefical side effect. This pisses off the ANTZ (anti-nicotine and tobacco zealots), who want to see nicotine criminalized, and Big Tobacco, who want the competition (e-cigs) eliminated. Well, screw youse, Big Pharma and Big Tobacco!
Vaping should be promoted as a quit-smoking method, not demonized as a nonexistent gateway to smoking and drug use.
Prophet 451
(9,796 posts)The research says that the number of people who vape without first being smokers barely exists. There's one or two, sure, but very, very few.
The ability to get out from the corporates helped me with this. I'm extremely anti-corporate (to the point of banning them if possible) and the lovely thing about vaping is that most of us aren't using Big Tobacco's shitty disposables, we're buying from the internet equivalent of mom n' pop start-ups.

(24,774 posts)But some "experts" with an ideological agenda are lying to the public trying to sell us on a gateway that doesn't exist.

(15,882 posts)- that is usually something you have to go looking for, it's higher than normal.
Get a couple of good, cheap e-cigs (my Pro Tank II and batteries are about $30 on ebay) and just try it for a week or two. It is clumsy, and will take some adjustment, making sure things are charged (get 3 batteries so you always have one).
See what happens. I didn't intend to quit, and the first 2 or 3 ecigs didn't do much. Then a person running one of these stores suggested the above, and 3 days later I realized I had laid my cigs down that day and forgot them for the first time in 40+ years.
That was last year, I haven't gone back. It was a pleasant surprise, since, like you, I had tried to quit multiple times, but you have to replace the nicotine you are taking in, and much of the ejuice that is out there won't.
For what it's worth...

(72,790 posts)I have tried to go cold turkey but I think I may have to ween myself off.
I've quit for months at a time but have always gone back.
jtuck004
(15,882 posts)to quit multiple times doctors should recommend that they consider an e-cig.
My experience was similar - multiple tries over 40+ years. We aren't alone, either. Before stop smoking efforts really ramped up, about half the country smoked. With all those efforts it dropped to about 15%, and has sat there for roughly a decade. So they got the easy pickings, now for the hard core.
So you need different tools. This vaping pipe - ecig - is one.
That this worked came as a surprise, but I'll take it. I have spent time learning more about it since. We could save ourselves billions of dollars (quite literally) and at least a couple hundred thousand early deaths every year if we would just buy these as a country and give them away.
Note: I found myself reaching for my lighter more than a year later, just before I get out my e-cig. 40+ years of smoking is hard to walk away from, and most party smokers and non-smokers don't know enough to help. Glad I found these things.
If you want more info, feel free to post here or pm me - I will share whatever I can. It really is a moment, when you figure out you aren't attached to those things any longer. Then although you want that pipe close, you find you aren't as attached to IT And perhaps from there...?

(9,796 posts)is exactly what the NHS here (UK) is considering doing. There's loads of smoking cessation stuff available on the NHS for the cost of a prescription (about $12; poor, old and disabled are exempt). But treating smoking related illnesses costs the NHS about £7 billion a year. Obviously, they'd like to reduce that so they're investigating the logistics of adding e-cigs to the smoking cessation aids.
I can pick up a basic e-cig kit and 10ml of basic juice for around £20. Given that the NHS buys in bulk and negotiates prices, I'd imagine they can slice a good 30-40% off that. So, let's say £14 for a kit and a starting bottle of juice. That's got to be cheaper than what the average smoker will cost the NHS in treatment.

I can walk up the steep hill by my house without huffing and puffing. I laughed the first time I stopped to catch my breath at the usual spot, I was breathing fine!
I sure don't miss the ashes and yellow stains all over wherever I smoked.
I am seeing more and more people out in public using them and I feel very happy for them that they found these amazing devices.

(5,325 posts)Six months was a big milestone for me. One of the things that I missed (and still do, actually) was seeing the genuinely nice gentlemen who run the smoke shop where I was a twice-a-week regular and I waited until my six-month anniversary to stop in to let them know that I missed seeing them and that I had not, in fact, taken my business elsewhere. Didn't trust myself to go in there until I'd made six months.
And yes, my critters don't miss my smoking and, like you, I don't have to worry about what it's doing to them anymore and that feels especially good.
Hang in there. It keeps getting easier.

(9,796 posts)I used to go to a really nice old-style tobacconist but they're seeing the market shift so they've started carrying high-end liquids, totallywicked and imported juices. They also brought up the adjoining coffee shop and turned it into a vape & coffee shop.
I'm celebrating six months by upgrading my kit and indulging in a few of the expensive imported liquids.

(2,302 posts)BEST thing I ever did! Ecigs scratch every itch a smoker has and make real ones so unappealing by comparison. I was a packnahalf smoker for over forty years, and I quit in FOUR days. I lit up my last one, took two puffs, and stubbed it out in disgust. Only time I ever quit before, I tried hypnotism, and I was a wreck...crying all the time.
I don't cough any more, I don't have to sneak around, no more air freshener, no tobacco stains on the walls...and I've gotten back my singing voice. I can breathe deeply and my adult daughters aren't grossed out or embarrassed around me. And I'm actually finally losing my extra ten pounds. Next week will be 3/4 of a year for me. Cannot recommend it more! I just wish Democrat legislators would see what a life-saver it is.
Prophet 451
(9,796 posts)I didn't go into this intending to quit but the cig shut up the nicotine gremlins and came in such lovely flavours that, in the end, I just didn't need to smoke anymore. It's a fucking revelation, it really is.
Here, the NHS is investigating the logistics of making them available on the NHS. That means your doctor writes you a prescription and you get a cig and some juice for just the $12 prescription fee (poor, sick and old are exempt). I've become something of an evangelist and my own doctor is now recommending them to anyone trying to quit.

(111,359 posts)You're right, while not ideal, getting your nicotine in steam is much better than getting it in the concentrated smoke of burning leaves. In addition, you tend to taper your nicotine dose without realizing it as you take fewer hits off the gizmo instead of compulsively smoking a butt to the end because, hey, those things are expensive!
I'm sure everybody around you including friends and folks at work have been overjoyed since they no longer have to smell the reek of burned tobacco to enjoy your company.

(14,861 posts)over the method they used to quit smoking, or how long they used it.
I've said before and I'll say again, I believe the motivation of anyone who does that is the desire to see smokers suffer, even after they've quit. It pisses them off that people usually have an easier time quitting when they use nicotine gum, e-cigs, patches or whatever. They don't want you to have an easier time, they'd rather you just keep on smoking than quit without being utterly miserable. E-cigs, in particular, drive them into a rage because vaping is so enjoyable in and of itself, that putting down the cigarettes is just about effortless.
Prophet 451

(9,933 posts)Quit years ago, too. So liberating. Don't you love how great everything smells now? How your own skin feels nicer and things are more flavorful? During particularly tough days even years later I long to inhale because the act of smoking was relaxing but the smoke? Don't miss it at all. So if e cigs help with that then that's great.
