Cecile Richards: Mom never led in the polls. People just showed up and voted.

Encouraging tweet from Cecile Richards about her mom, Ann.

Mom never led in the polls - she was elected #TX gov b/c people showed up & voted. Ready to make history again? #tbt

I mailed my ballot this last week. I am trying not to let the polls and pundits discourage me here in Florida. According to both, Rick Scott and Charlie Crist are the same....they say there were no clear winners during the debates. Well, I say there is a clear winner when the nation and world are laughing at our present governor try to speak coherently.

I voted for Charlie Crist, and I voted a hearty YES on the medical marijuana amendment. We were feeling really good about that amendment for a while. But now the religious folks have gotten into the fray, our sheriff the loyal Southern Baptist is doing a good job of convincing people it would open the door to terrible things if sick people got to use what would really help them.

Now it's down close to 60% approval (it needs 60% in order to pass), down from a high of close to 80% not long ago.

The media is the worst. Most major papers have endorsed Crist...but you really have to dig to find that information.

So thanks, Cecile Richards, for reminding us that your mother never led in the polls.

When Ann Richards began her campaign for governor, she was an underdog, given little chance of winning by the pundits and political pros—even by some of the paid consultants on her own campaign staff. In the summer of 1990, after one of the most brutal Democratic primary elections in memory, Ann started her race against Clayton Williams more than 27 points behind him in the polls, considered to be an insurmountable obstacle to overcome.

Few people remember how bleak the situation looked for Ann as the campaign headed into Labor Day, just two months before the general election. The Capitol press corps had written her off and enjoyed taking pot-shots at her and her hapless campaign staff. After all, she was an underfunded, divorced single mother, a recovering alcoholic, a liberal Democrat, a civil rights activist and a pro-choice feminist in a conservative, increasingly Republican-leaning state.

Most political pros considered these facts so negative that it was a safe bet to predict her defeat, just as the “experts” are predicting defeat for Wendy Davis today. Yet, some of Ann’s closest friends and advisors were determined to do everything within their power to show the naysayers that there was a path to victory, no matter what the experts predicted. We knew we had to be bold, rather than cautious. So, we put on our blinders, ignored the carping and criticism, and forged ahead to create a disciplined and focused campaign that could be flexible enough to take advantage of any good luck that came our way. And we needed a lot of good luck!

I got that room because I said I could stay late and TPTB thought Texas could go to dawn. I was there, in that NYC cubby, when Ann Richards won.

I was there when she lost, too.

http://www.nytimes.com/1990/11/03/us/the-1990-campaign-a-new-gaffe-by-candidate-in-the-texas-governor-s-race.html

A Gallup Texas Poll released Wednesday found that among people who say they are likely to vote, the candidates each received 44 percent of the preferences. Two weeks ago Mr. Williams had a 10-point lead among the respondents in a similar poll. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

A Mason-Dixon Texas Poll released today found Mr. Williams with 45 percent to Ms. Richards's 43 percent. The edge was within the margin of sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points. The number of people giving Mr. Williams an unfavorable rating jumped to 41 percent from 29 percent in a similar poll two weeks ago. Ms. Richards's unfavorable rating remained stable at 43 percent.

Every recent poll shows Wendy Davis down by 10-plus points. I'd love for her to win, but the polls haven't broken her way. They were breaking Richards way toward the end of the 1990 election.

Davis' opponent has yet to hit a major gaffe, Williams had two right near election time:
1. The comment about how he hoped she didn't go back to drinking, caused a lot of people to bristle
2. That he didn't know what Prop 1 was about and it was the only proposition on the ballot

I had a neighbor in a north Chicago suburb (upscale neighborhood) - who told me that her husband always told her who to vote for. I asked her if she did as he asked and she didn't really answer my question, but gave me the impression that she voted as she pleased. This woman had a masters degree. Her husband was always an AH.

Without a doubt a lot of women out there are being told who to vote for by their husbands, boyfriends and even fathers. If we're lucky - they'll just show up and vote - as they please.

And that tweet from Cecile gave me goosebumps. I'm proud to say I contributed to all the new voter registrations, and I'll be working on election day to get people to the polls.

I refuse to listen to anyone who says Wendy can't win. She can, and I believe she will.

Oh, they've called him out once or twice, but for the most part, he gets a pass. He's leading in the polls, surprise, surprise!

I saw Cecile's post on Facebook yesterday and it gave me hope. Thanks for posting it here. I'm going to look at it every day until the election is over to remind myself that a truly liberal woman could win statewide in Texas. Yes, it was a different time, but that election was inspirational, just like Ann Richards.

I'll keep this photo by my laptop and look at it every time I see a post on this forum insinuating that Democrats somehow deserve to lose.
