(9,766 posts)A student believed to have opened fire at Marysville-Pilchuck High School Friday morning is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to two law-enforcement sources.
Police have not released details, but there are reports of as many as six other people injured.
Ambulances are staging around the school and police are searching room to room with guns drawn, leaving tape to mark the doors of the rooms that have been cleared.
Some students were being evacuated from the school, walking out and across the fields with their hands up. Some were being bused to a nearby church. Others were being told to stay inside classrooms.
The shooting was reported about 10:45 a.m.
Well update this post with more information.

(28,581 posts)They freak the fuck out about Ebola, which has not killed anyone infected here, but guns that actually kill people? nope, can't even pass basic safety and sale regulations. Can't even have a Surgeon General to help with the ebola "crisis" because the nominee says that guns are a health and safety issue (which it is) ...........
We are a seriously fucked up country.

(9,951 posts)Somehow we need to light a fire under Congress to change some of the laws to reflect what the majority of people want in this country.
I remember back in the day (1980) being able to buy a firearm (a pistol) from a friend for 60 bucks. In High School! Some things need to change...and need to change ASAP.

What would have stopped this would be if all you NRA-types kept your guns where your kids CANNOT get them. AND stop giving your children deadly weapons.

(75,480 posts)We don't let them drive until a certain age or drink alcohol or smoke. Sure they will try but the adults who are careless or who enable them usually pay a price for it whether in money, lawyers, or even having their licenses taken from them. So I think we need to make adults responsible for their guns by making any minor possessing a gun illegal and punishing the adults who allow them to, a seller, a parent or other adult.
Generic Other
(28,979 posts)The Washington Universal Background Checks for Gun Purchases, Initiative 594 is on the November 4, 2014 ballot in the state of Washington as an Initiative to the Legislature.
If approved by voters, the measure would require background checks to be run on every person purchasing a gun in the state of Washington, even those who are doing so via private sales. However, transfers of antique guns and those between immediate family members would be exempt from the background checks. The measure also requires that dealers who are facilitating gun transfers, be they through the licensed dealer or a private seller, receive confirmation in writing from the chief of police or sheriff that the purchaser in question "is eligible to possess a pistol [...] and that the application to purchase is approved by the chief of police or sheriff." Furthermore, the initiative would render it illegal to hand off a firearm to people outside a person's immediate family, though exceptions are mentioned, including situations in which people are at a shooting range or hunting.[1][2]
