A few days ago, Dallas nurse Nina Pham lay in bed in an isolated hospital room at National Institutes of Health (NIH) where her doctors donned hazmat suits to care for her. On Friday, President Barack Obama hugged Pham, now free of Ebola, in the open air of the Oval Office.
Lets give a hug for the cameras, he told Pham.
Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, NIH infectious disease head Anthony Fauci, along with several other doctors and family members, were also present at the Friday meeting.
Pham contracted Ebola while caring for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, who died Oct. 8 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. Pham was subsequently moved to NIH in Maryland to undergo treatment, and was declared Ebola-free Friday morning.

(29,067 posts)and never understood why so many others -- including some dems -- have characterized
him as "aloof" or "cold".
He's charming as hell, in my book -- Always out there with a smile, a hug or a clap on the
shoulder -- I never got that "aloof" thing.

(70,508 posts)And even as a straight man the kindness he showed to this young lady w/two dads is
amazing.
Universal Pre K, mapping the human brain, gettig rid of half of the world's plutonium,
his fight against ebola (he has been working on it since last spring), and saving a
large piece of "wildness" in the Pacific. And yet our dirty media and the repubs sell the
false story that he has really done nothing.
We are so lucky to have him.

(18,402 posts)Can you imagine if Ronald Reagan had hugged an AIDS patient back in the day? You may not remember, but people were irrationally (perhaps even moreso than with Ebola) of contracting AIDS from a handshake or proximity on the bus.
It's also a salute to the brave work that nurses do.

(90,704 posts)Not only did it show she had a heart, but that she was not afraid of getting the disease from simple contact such as that. It sent a powerful message to the public.
Same here. Good for our POTUS.

I have a criticism though, the first pic, men should not have eyelashes longer than a woman. It's not fair!

Do I really have to put up a sarcasm sign?
You never know these days. Not only are we without humor, we have to be politically and Ebola correct.

(62,271 posts)In American politics, so to speak.
The outrage over Ebola and the panic that ensued was trumped up nonsense.
The administrators and health care workers did what they could with a bad situation (someone deathly ill exposing the virus to workers).
It seems that Ebola, if treated very early, with western medicine, is quite survivable.
