(8,556 posts)Everybody knows this. Bin Laden was one of the Arab Islamists who supported the Afghan insurgency. The US did too.
The bigger story is actually Afghan Islamists like Hekmatyr, who were supported by American money funneled through Pakistan, who in turn channeled the aid to their pet Mujahideen group (there were actually seven) in the hopes that they could use them as proxies during the war and in a post-Communist Afghanistan.
It's not a coincidence that Pakistan was one of only two countries who officially recognized the Taliban.
