Aw, poor Sam "Justice Alito Denied Brunch By Hostess Who Didn't Recognize Him"

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/justice-alito-turned-away-brunch

ByCAITLIN MACNEALPublishedOCTOBER 27, 2014, 1:14 PM EDT 5189 Views

The unrecognizable Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is not a big enough deal for brunch.

He was turned away from Sunday brunch in New Haven, Conn. on a trip to Yale this weekend, according to law news site Above the Law.

Alito and his wife walked into Heirloom, the restaurant at The Study at Yale Hotel, and asked to be seated for brunch, but the hostess apparently told them the restaurant was completely booked.

According to the Above the Law tipster, Alito calmly left the restaurant without identifying himself. When asked, the hostess said she had no clue who he was.

I imagine Justice Ginsberg would have done the same. That is what adults are supposed to do. If it were some actor, they may have made a scene.

Why should someone "recognizing" him make a difference? Does knowing who someone is magically give the matre d' the ability to shit out a table for two?

Recognizing and seating him and his upholstery-fabric styling wife would mean that some poor schmuck who didn't have a public profile--but who booked a table--would have been screwed.

We can get indignant over anything, especially before the facts are in. And apparently now, after the facts are in and even if they don't support our preconceived biases.

The REPORTING of it suggests that the hostess was somehow in error for not recognizing the putz and giving him special treatment--that's where the outrage is.

How dare she not recognize the "big man" and give away someone else's table? Why didn't she recognize that innocuous little turd?

That's the vibe I get off this piece, and I don't care for it much.

Except your headline seems to imply he was upset, when he didn't say anything about it or raise a ruckus. But in general, why was this even written about? He went some place, they were full, he didn't complain he just left.

not recognizing alito, the hostess said, "no tables available, sorry, sir"

alito then told the hostess he was a supreme court justice and perhaps she could make an accommodation.

to which the hostess replies, "sorry, sir, it's against this restaurant's religion to serve supreme court justices!"

A man goes to have brunch. The place is full. He leaves. Hell, I wouldn't recognize him either. If the place is full, he won't fit. Story over.

Now, had he complained and tried to throw his weight around, that would be a story. Had he still been excluded, that would be a story.

As it is, it's not a story at all, just something that happened with no consequence.

But that we already knew.

Supposedly there was an anti-abortion demonstration at the Supreme Court one day, just as Harry Blackmun was arriving for work. He walked by in plain sight, but none of the demonstrators had a clue that the author of Roe v. Wade was right there.

A big majority of Americans would have been as clueless as that waitress was.

This reminds of the time that Eleanor Roosevelt, after FDR's death, was booked into the Eastland Hotel here in Maine. Upon arriving...with Fala...she was informed that hotel rules required that Fala be housed in the hotel kennel. There was no question that they knew who she was...and who Fala was She understood that rules were rules and was very gracious about it,although she...and Fala...went to stay elsewhere where Fala could stay in her room.
