Do you remember all of your votes for US President?

I turned 21 in 1972. I had to think about it for a while, but I was able to recall the following:

1972: George McGovern
1976: Jimmy Carter
1980: Jimmy Carter
1984: Walter Mondale
1988: Michael Dukakis
1992: Bill Clinton
1996: Bill Clinton
2000: Al Gore
2004: John Kerry
2008: Barack Obama
2012: Barack Obama

I'm 5-6 since I was able to vote. Damn, I hope I can even things up in 2016!

1996: Ross Perot My first election. Just didn't like Bill Clinton. Looking back, not a good choice by me, but I was 18!
2000: Ralph Nader Didn't really care for Gore or his wife. Like Gore a lot better now.
2004: John Kerry Didn't love Kerry but wanted GWB the hell out of the White House.
2008: Barack Obama Thought Obama was the best DEM candidate, although I didn't vote for him in the primary.
2012: Rocky Anderson Knew Obama would win my state (CT) so I went with a progressive third party candidate.

I was old enough to vote in 76 and 80, but didn't. Don't ask me why. I knew it was important, but I was moving around a lot (graduating from high school, then getting ready to and then enlisting in the USAF).

If nothing else, my vote cancels out my fundie ex-husband's.

(First-ever vote was in '94 congressional when Ollie North was running for Senate...Very interesting times, to say the least)

96: Clinton (no-brainer)

00: Nader (I'll admit I'd been seduced by all the hot-assed Green Party girls on campus...I was living in Kansas at the time for grad school, so Bush winning KS by 30 points was a foregone conclusion, so save me the grief)

04: Kerry (no-brainer)

08: Obama (no-brainer)

12: Obama (no-brainer)

16: WetzellBill/Kurovski?? (In a more innocent time DUers were getting some momentum behind those two -- We as a forum still need to push harder to get one of our own in Washington )

In Illinois you can vote in either primary.

But I voted for Carter in the general election because I wasn't pleased with the campaign Anderson ran after the primary and because I saw Reagan for the threat he turned out to be.

My first presidential vote in 1976 went to independent Eugene McCarthy, mostly because he inspired me in 1968 when I was 11.

The only other time I did not vote for the Dem candidate was 1996. I was disillusioned with Clinton and cast a protest vote for Ross Perot.

So yes, early on I had a hard time voting for Dems. In 84 I stood there for a couple of minutes before asking the retired lady next to me for her name and if I could vote for her. She waited for me to finish and asked my why in the world would I do that. Told her I couldn't warm up to Mondale and there was no was no way I was voting for the ass currently in office. She laughed and surprisingly agreed that Reagan was an ass, then turned to the poll watchers and stated, now I get to go home and tell my husband that I have something he doesn't have, a vote for Presiedent. 1996 was even tougher, stood there for 10 minutes trying to pick Clinton, filled out the whole ballet went back to the top and wrote in my nephews name.

The rest is the same. At the 68 convention in Chicago, there was a press conference that I attended, McGovern was running in Kennedy's spot, and I walked in at the end of the conference in a large hotel meeting room. I had dressed up in a jacket and tie, but the conference was opened to all. So I listened for a while, and it was over. As McGovern walked out, I shook his hand and had a chance to talk to him for a moment. I remember saying that I thanked him for setting up the food stamp program which he sponsored. He was surprised to hear that, and he thanked me and shook my hand and that moment was over. Humphrey won the nomination. What a difference if he would have won..

election.

I have the same voting record and I am very proud of it.

I was so proud to cast my first Presidential vote for George McGovern. I first met him when I was about 9 when we went to Mitchell to meet my grandparents for Sunday dinner. George and Eleanor came in and sat very near us. Both my grandparents and my parents knew him and had worked for him in elections by that time.
