With less than a week until voters go to the polls, New York Rep. Michael Grimm leads his Democratic challenger, former councilman Domenic Recchia, 53 percent to 34 percent, according to a new NY1-Capital New York-Siena College poll released this evening.
Grimm leads among likely voters, despite facing a 20-count indictment on charges including tax evasion and perjury.
The incumbent congressman also had a higher favorability in the swing district, which includes all of Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn.
According to the poll, 48 percent of voters surveyed said they have a favorable opinion of Grimm, compared to just 31 percent for Recchia, whom 46 percent viewed unfavorably.

(14,691 posts)It's also the most racist part of NYC. I was a life insurance agent for a brief period which took me to SI. I heard some pretty ugly stuff. I am guessing they felt comfortable talking to me since I look Irish.

(11,175 posts)The district is the most conservative in the city but not hopelessly so. Obama carried it in 2012, 51-47.
The geography problem is that the district covers all of Staten Island plus a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Staten Island is the least populous borough in New York City and has an insular, us-against-them attitude. There was for a while a movement to secede from the city. There are probably Staten Islanders (in each party) who strongly favor any Island candidate over any non-Island candidate -- and Recchia is from the Brooklyn part of the district. That's a problem for him.
Well, I'm about to go off to do GOTV for Recchia (in Brooklyn, though he also of course has a Staten Island operation). Realistically, though, flipping the seat may have to await the special election that will follow if Grimm is convicted at his felony trial next month.
