So perhaps she was misinformed about the roommate having Ebola, or about her actually being a roommate of the person in question.

Hickox was last in SL on October 20, 2014. The roommate could have been infected and recovered before she live with them.

It also reads as if the roommate was also a health worker treating Ebola patients. It is in the paragraph discussing PPEs and infection risks for nurses.

In other words, it is of no significance whatsoever. It is used just to illustrate that sometimes nurses get infected without knowing exactly how (other than that they were regularly in direct contact with Ebola patients fluids).
