ST. PETERSBURG The anti-Western rhetoric that dominated Russias recent elections has a new focus, with gays targeted as symbols of Western permissiveness in a wave of laws being adopted across the country.
Here in St. Petersburg, a city that prides itself as the most European in all Russia, the lawmaker behind a new local ban on gay propaganda has said he is defending traditional Russian values against an onslaught from the West. Gay activists two of whom were the first to go on trial for violations of the law this week counter that the rules will legitimize homophobic attitudes and aggression even as Europe and the United States move toward acceptance.
St. Petersburgs parliament was the latest to enact such a law, which imposes fines of up to $17,000 for spreading propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality or transgenderism among minors, and the national parliament in recent weeks took up a proposal for a similar measure. In a country where a 2010 poll by the respected Levada Center found that 74 percent of Russians said that gays and lesbians were morally dissolute or deficient, advocates for gay rights worry that the laws could spread rapidly.
The homophobic mood is growing in society, and minorities are getting more and more afraid, said Igor Kochetkov, the head of Coming Out, a gay rights group in St. Petersburg. This week, he appeared in a cramped courtroom to defend himself against charges that he spread gay propaganda to minors when he unfurled a sign that said No to crimes against gays and lesbians on a crowded St. Petersburg street corner.

(10,745 posts)Sadly, I think much of the resurgence of this rightist bullshit in Russia can be blamed at least in part on the fact that Mikhail Gorbachev's hopes of turning Russia into a Swedish-style social democrat state failed miserably thanks to Yeltsin's bungling and the introduction of the policies of the 'Chicago Boys' into Moscow.

(8,556 posts)As is the notion that homosexuality and tolerance thereof are alien ideals foisted by an arrogant West on everybody else - which is exactly what this guy is arguing here.
In the end, it's not always about the American right. It's far, far worse in Russia than it is here. Even somebody like Santorum would only be mildly-to-moderately homophobic by their standards.

(4,243 posts)Thanks for the info!
When I see words such as liberty, freedom, and traditional values, a red flag goes up.
Those things are fine in and of themselves, but when a politician uses them I fear an ulterior motive.

(8,556 posts)When a gay pride parade in Moscow was attacked by ruffians. Alot of people were beaten, including a member of the German parliament and British entertainer Richard Fairbass of 'Right Said Fred' fame.
But given the homophobia in Russia, it wasn't really surprising. The only surprising thing was that the guy from Right Said Fred is gay
But seriously, it's bad over there. Real bad, as this OP shows.

(8,556 posts)I'm not saying there hasn't been outreach, but I highly doubt it's very significant to the culture of intolerance over there.
Russians are perfectly capable of being homophobic without help from the US right.

Lively credits the popularity of Russian-language translations of The Pink Swastika to the support of Pastor Alexey Ledyaev, the head of the New Generation Church, an evangelical Christian megachurch based in Riga, the capital city of Latvia. New Generation has more than 200 satellite churches spread throughout Eastern Europe, Argentina, Israel and the United States.
"One of my supporters gave him [Ledyaev] a copy of The Pink Swastika. He was very impressed by it," Lively said in a December 2006 radio show on WTTT-AM, based in Boston. "The European press was bashing them [Ledyaev and his church] for being Nazis. He was finally thrilled that he had something to counter the media with." Ledyaev did not respond to E-mails seeking comment.
