About Me
Its time to vote for me!
(And to download a rack card you can print out3-up, two-sidedand distribute yourself, click here.)
I was born in Tucson in 1960 and still have strong Arizona roots. But I list my hometown as Tulsa because we moved there when I was 2 and stayed until I left high school. From there I spent 7 years in the Boston area, attending Tufts University, which was mostly an excuse to read books and not work for 4 years. I have moved to Durham twice, both to follow women. Ended up marrying the second one. After spending 9 months here in 1985-86, I lived in New York City for 2 years, returning for good in 1988. I love living in Durham in part because it's a lot like living in Tulsa without having to live in Tulsa any more. These travels have made my accent rather thick and a tad unusual - an amalgamation of the Oklahoma and Piedmont drawls with a dash of Brooklyn Yiddish. Since then I got divorced then married Pam Adams in 1999. We currently have an animal population of 1 dog and 4 cats, all strays who found us.
I retired from politics in 2010 and only returned because I saw the need for someone to articulate the libertarian message in this race. I was raised to abhor violence and respect all people regardless of race or gender or anything else, which means I've been libertarian all my life. The most beautiful thing in the world to me is seeing someone fully accepting themselves and taking control of their own life, without shame or apologies. If everyone got comfortable inside their own skin, this world would be a much happier place.
My hobbies besides politics are cooking and baking, studying food as medicine, reading philosophy and history, listening to music, taking road trips across America, and fantasy football. I don't align myself with any particular religion, but I am an Oklahoma Sooners football fan, which is pretty much the same thing.
Here is my campaigns opening statement:

7 p.m.: The State Board of Elections is holding an emergency meeting to discuss requests from Johnston, Robeson and Lincoln counties to keep certain polls open beyond 7:30 p.m. because of problems earlier in the day.
A precinct in Maxton ran out of ballots and closed for about 45 minutes in the afternoon only 500 ballots were provided to the precinct, which has about 2,500 registered voters, officials said so 60 to 70 voters who showed up during that time were turned away. The state board voted to allow the precinct to stay open until 8:15 p.m.
A polling place was moved for a precinct in Clayton, but the state elections board website continued to show a photo of the old site. Precinct officials redirected voters to the new site, but some local advocates asked that the precinct remain open until 8 p.m. because of the confusion. The board rejected the request.
The board also rejected a proposal to keep the Bentonville precinct open until 9 p.m. because it opened late.
Lincoln County had a countywide power outage Tuesday morning, which delayed the opening of two polling places by 15 to 30 minutes. Two voters complained about the issue, but the board decided not to extend the voting time beyond 7:30 p.m.
5:15 p.m.: There have been sporadic reports of problems at individual precincts throughout the day, although state election officials say there are few signs of systematic problems thus far.
The biggest problems logged by the state have been in Johnston County, where the polling site at the Bentonville Community Building didnt open until 8 a.m., an hour and a half after Election Days 6:30 a.m. start time. Josh Lawson, a spokesman for the board of elections, said roughly 70 people left the polling place without voting in the morning.
The State Board of Elections has the option extending the hours that polling place will be open beyond the normal 7:30 p.m. closing time, although they have not yet met to make that decision.
5 p.m.: Voting-rights group Advancement Project is reporting numerous problems with voting machines in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte), with one polling place being down for more than an hour. The group has asked county elections officials to extend voting hours at the site, but changes to state elections laws that the General Assembly passed last year require that the State Board of Elections approve any such extensions.

(14,971 posts)9 p.m.: Turnout among college-age voters was up 38 to 60 percent over 2010 totals in campus precincts in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, according to the North Carolina Public Interest Research Group Education Funds New Voters Project.
Turnout at North Carolina State University was up 57 percent even after the polling site was moved off campus, the group said. Meanwhile, turnout at a Duke University precinct was up 40 percent, and turnout at two precincts near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was up 38 and 60 percent.

(2,825 posts)Neither have all the votes in Wake and Durham-- all democratic big population areas. Steve Karnacky(spelling?) was explaining this to Tweety, Rachel etc.
I am thrilled that there is a good possibility of Wake county commissioners making a Democratic sweep. Hello to less development on the watershed, mass transit, better schools and MORE TREES!!!

dammit
some of the most pitiful people in the world live in this shitty county and time after time they listen to the gop's bullshit, jhc they watch what they do, they KNOW they are struggling and yet they vote for this republican filth.
just can't believe it sometimes......
not even sure who to blame.
oh wait - with tillis vs hagan...........there have been reports of problems at the polls but i don't want to look like a complete CT nut so i won't say what i'm thinking.

(11,441 posts)She should have come out swinging as to why she's proud to be a Democrat -- take a fucking stand. And how this state is losing out because the GOP fuckers refuse to expand Medicaid. I wonder how many of these votes for Tillis have to do with the recent marriage equality ruling. Some people in this state are *that* crazy.
She's proud to be "not too far left, and not too far right." Well, like that Truman (Truman?) quote, voters will go with the Republican.
We'll see. 11% still to go as far as reporting...

What happened to the big bad teabagger? **crickets**
Kay Hagan could have gone there but did not.
Well, they will get the government they voted for.............let's see how well it all works out for us.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)the efforts to suppress Dem voters in NC are formidable at this point. The marriage equality thing could have hurt, but I don't think being more of a "proud" Dem would help Kay. Anyone who goes for Tillis was probably always leaning that way. I sense a lot of confusion and problems with the voting process, corrupted by the current Rethug leadership. So I'm giving Kay more of a pass on this. I think she ran a decent campaign.
This is about the divide that exists in NC--between rural/urban, white/color, corporate vs non-corporate, and I have to add men vs women (or women's interests). All whipped up by the Kochs and other wealthy predators, the NRA, the rabid right wing media, tea party and rightwing clergy etc. Before you can even critique Kay's performance, you have to acknowledge the toxic environment of fear, corruption and distortion that she has to contend with.
