Florida Democrats Lose Motion to Extend Voting in Broward County

A judge rejected the Florida Democratic Party's emergency request Tuesday to extend voting in Broward County because of what it called "several individual and systemic breakdowns that made it difficult for voters to cast regular ballots."

The motion had asked the judge to give voters two extra hours, until 9 p.m. ET, to cast their ballots because of mechanical failures that it said caused some polling places to open late and blocked voters from updating their addresses, as well as confusion over where people's polling places were after recent redistricting. But the judge declined, and polls closed as scheduled at 7 p.m.

Broward, a Democratic-leaning county that is home to Miami, is Florida's largest county and was one of five the state secretary of state's office investigated for voting difficulties in the November 2012 general election, including lines that were up to seven hours long.
