(15,438 posts)Now it's time to veto every bullshit piece of Koch Bros legislation and start using those executive orders - just like G.W. Bush did when the Democrats took control of Congress in 2006. Dubya went from ONE veto in his previous six years to ELEVEN in his remaining two.
The Democrats need to give the Republicans a taste of their own medicine and hold off bad legislation until Democrats win back the Senate and keep the WH in 2016..
The uninformed American electorate never fails to vote against their own self interest. I mean, how on Earth can Brownback win re-election??

(8,733 posts)but the numbers just are not in our favor. There is little to no chance for us to make ANY gains in the Senate in 2016 much less regain the Senate. Barring a change in voter habits and a break in Dem voter apathy, I would suspect that the odds heavily favor a rethug WH, Senate and House in 2016.
We need to conceded the federal government and focus, almost completely, on state elections. We have to retake a majority of state legislatures before the next census so that, when lines are redrawn by 2022, those lines are drawn in Dems favor. We should have learned by now, with the 2010 and now 2014 elections, that state elections matter. Midterm elections matter.

(297,655 posts)as I said in my response below, President Obama needs to be bold. Don't be cowered. Be resolute.
He should wave the veto pen.
He should take executive action on immigration.
And then let them impeach ... it will be a circus and the Republicans will come out looking like clowns.
So do it, Mr. President. Be bold.

(297,655 posts)the White House when they were discussing the Dem election losses, napkinz.
We'll see what happens.. there's got to be some silver linings here.. And, we've lost a battle not the war.. that will go on and on ad infinitum.
I don't really see how the President will be less than Bold.. the hatefilled gop already disrespect him way out of bounds.. But, he's still the President and we have Filibuster and VETO Power.
Can't sleep, eh she?
Ya...going now Cha. I had a few disagreements on the board tonight, they pissed me off.

(297,655 posts)nice thing to wake up to in the morning, she.. but it will pass while we're hangin' tough and we will persevere.
At least Obama will be President tomorrow.. really the last line of defense against fascism.
Oh, and the Filibuster and VETO Power!

(17,199 posts)Cha ... that was my EXACT thought, almost word for word!
And if he succeeds, THAT will be his legacy. It may not be the legacy he had planned on.
But it will go down as one hell of a legacy!
I like that, napkinz.. thank you!

(17,199 posts)Steven hit it out of the park, don't you think?
"The President should give this election all of the consideration that Republicans gave his landslide
election in 2008. In other words, Executive Orders and Vetoes should be the order of the day."
Has anyone said it better?
napkinz
(17,199 posts)I do ... if he comes out tomorrow with a statement like, "The American people have spoken. I get the message. I look forward to working with the new Senators to get the job done." As opposed to a statement like, "I have the veto pen. I will use it."
So he can take the conciliatory route of conceding, or the bold route of leading.
I hope he chooses the latter. Veto, veto, veto! And take executive action on immigration now!
(The president tried the conciliatory route -- reaching out, looking for bipartisanship -- for five years. All he got in return was OBSTRUCTION. And you know what they say, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.)
that's my take on where to go from here
(hope you are holding up well; this was one exhausting night)

(297,655 posts)President Obama knows damn well they won't work with him.. but, he might say that to let the country know he's willing. But, we'll see what happens. I cannot predict Anything.
I was a mess but getting stronger as the time goes by.. also we got a new Democratic Gov in Hawaii that I wasn't sure which way it would go... so that made us happy here!
How are you doing, napkinz?

I think this thread by stevenleser says it BEST.
This thread should have thousands of views, hundreds of recs.
It's only two sentences but it hits the nail on the head!
I hope it becomes the mantra of the party going forward.
(Perhaps sheshe, you, and I can keep this thread kicked until it gets the recognition it deserves. Just a thought.)

(17,199 posts)this part conveys the same idea of this very thread:
Thats right, veto.
See, the balance of power? Those constitutional checks and balances Republicans lately like to go on and on about? Well those cut both ways.

Use that veto pen.
Take executive action on immigration.
And let their heads explode as they call for impeachment ... for that will show the circus that is a Republican-controlled Congress.

(7,759 posts)is best for the people. Dems chose to run away from a positive economic record and with the help of the media they never focused the voters' attention on the economic numbers as the GOPers did in 2010..even though they were the cause of the bad numbers.
And like it or not, voter suppression is real and it is working for the GOP and likely to continue to work for them because getting decent SCOTUS nominees will now be impossible for Obama.
Our Hispanic and Latino brothers and sisters will have to GOTV in 2016. They are blaming Obama for not acting on immigration when they should realize the GOP would not let it happen. If they fouled up passing some of the legislation they actually wanted passed simply to keep Obama from getting credit for it they will smash immigration reform until they control it.

(50,983 posts)Just a prediction, but he will even receive praise from Republicans for his cooperative nature.
Those are my predictions.
Before you jump my ass let us take a wait and see posture.

(904 posts)The people have spoken. In essence, they voted to turn the government over to the Republicans....and that's their prerogative.
So if this is what the majority wants, give it to them.
