Trayvon Martin case highlighted as racial profiling by Senate panel

WASHINGTON — Efforts to ban racial profiling by authorities got a small boost Tuesday when a U.S. Senate subcommittee highlighted the issue during a broad hearing that touched on topics ranging from illegal immigration to the Trayvon Martin case.

Central to each discussion were concerns that average citizens are targeted by police or others because of their background. Lawmakers repeatedly cited the Trayvon shooting. Trayvon's family and their supporters contend that Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman followed the black teenager, whom he ultimately shot, because of his skin color.

"He [Trayvon] was profiled, followed, chased and murdered. This case has captured international attention and will go down in history as a textbook example of racial profiling," said U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami, who appeared as a witness at the hearing.

Wilson has been among the most vocal activists on Capitol Hill following the shooting. With Zimmerman's arrest, she has turned her attention to broader issues.

A) the racist is carrying a gun.

or,

B) the racist is a boss, supervisor or co-worker who isn't above sabotaging you.

For the record, I think George Zimmerman is not overtly a racist, but he did fall in the trap of thinking that what he was doing would receive the approval among those he respected. In Sanford, that would have walked him right into profiling territory.

When they say that it's the end of their way of life, they know exactly what they're talking about.

It's about the privilege and entitlement. They're freaking out because many of them know that they make a living by cheating their neighbors at the behest of the status quo.

We're talking about the kind of indiscretions that the entitled are allowed to commit to keep a dishonest core in a community in positions of leadership where they can continue abusing their power.

I'm glad this is getting the attention it needs but doesn't this seem odd when the trial hasn't even been held yet?

wouldn't zimmerman's defense have to say something about influencing the jury/judge if the Senate has already convicted Zimmerman?
feels wierd.
