A few protestors broke away from the main, peaceful march in Mexico City's historic district and set the doors to the Palacio Nacional on fire. It was the original palace of Hernan Cortes.

There have been protests all over the country. The U.S. media is slowly deciding to cover it.

I watched a documentary tonight called "La Camioneta". In it, a bus driver coming south from the U.S. to Guatemala said "if you behave in the U.S., you don't get any trouble" and if you pay some of your salary (extortion) to the bandit "authorities" in Guatemala, you're fine ...... But inbetween (in Mexico) it's anything goes. Sounded pretty bad.

Mexican Authorities: Drug Traffickers Confess To Killing 43 Students

Mexican authorities says drug gang members have confessed to killing 43 students from a teachers college in the country's south and described a grisly disposal of the bodies — burning them on a pyre and then pulverizing teeth and bones to prevent the remains from being identified.

<...>

The bizarre case allegedly began when the mayor of Iguala, Jose Luis Abarca, ordered police to attack the students.

The Los Angeles Times reported earlier this week that authorities believe Abarca and his wife, Maria de los Angeles Pineda, "ordered local police to intercept and do away with the students, from a rural college for the poor, who were en route to Iguala and might have planned to disrupt a party and speech by Pineda."

The newspaper says: "The case soon revealed the deep infiltration by drug gangs of police and City Hall in Iguala, about 80 miles south of Mexico City, and in other municipalities in Guerrero state. The governor, Angel Aguirre, was forced to resign amid the scandal, which has also handed President Enrique Peña Nieto his worst security crisis in nearly two years of government."

Protesters set fire to Iguala's town hall, after Mexican investigators name the mayor and his wife as suspects in the disappearance of 43 students. Protesters break into a town hall building in Iguala, angry over the fate of 43 students who went missing last month. Investigators say the wife, has links with the notorious Guerreros Unidos gang, and the couple have go into hiding.

The kicker:

The case has sent shockwaves across Mexico and undermined President Enrique Pena Nieto's claims that Mexico is getting safer under his watch.

Seriously?

They are part of Guerrero Unidos, pretty much a local gang.

And the mayor of Iguala and his wife, the alleged gang head, are members of the PRD, not the PRI.

Pena Nieto has captured or killed the leaders of all the major cartels. El Chapo ran free for years under the PAN, leading a lot of people to claim he had a favored relationship.

There is no doubt that drug-related corruption continues under the PRI, too. But in Mexico, it looks like everybody is in on the action.

The anger over Iguala does, however, tap in to broader concerns about corruption and, especially, impunity.
