"Democrat Alma Adams will become the 100th woman in the 113th Congress after winning a special election on Tuesday to replace Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.), who became director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency earlier this year.
Because it was a special election, Adams will not have to wait until January to be sworn in. When that happens, it will be the first time Congress has ever had 100 women members concurrently serving.
Alma Adams is a trailblazer and champion for women and families who is now poised to make history as the 100th woman serving in Congress, said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, a progressive PAC dedicated to electing women who support abortion rights.
Working families need leaders like Alma, who will unapologetically fight to protect womens reproductive healthcare access and economic security. And with the help of the EMILYs List community now more than three million members strong Alma is on her way to igniting change in Congress.

She's already there!
WASHINGTON -- North Carolina's newly elected 12th district congresswoman is already in the nation's capitol. Alma Adams left Friday morning to immediately take over the remainder of Mel Watt's term -- that runs through the end of the year.
That comes after a campaign that ended Tuesday with the Democrat defeating Republican Vince Coakley with 75-percent of the vote.
Adams thinks her20 years in North Carolina's General Assembly will help her make a quick transition."

(3,732 posts)I was disheartened this week by reading about the early women's suffrage movement.
Before women's suffrage, women did stand for the more "social" views: health and safety, protecting the family and children, food and shelter, helping the poor in general, community issues... - women were perceived as being "naturally" more concerned with social well-being than men. The question was: once women got the vote, would their vote promote the social well-being of the community or would they suddenly become "more like men" simply because they were empowered and vote according to personal interest like men did.
Today I believe we have our answer. Female politicians can be as rabidly rightwing as male politicians. They can be worse.
This makes me think that celebrating the ascension of women in politics just because they are women doesn't cut it anymore.
That woman could be Sarah Palin or Michele Bachmann. Bleh.
The Third Way loves lurking behind women in power suits.
May there be more Almas, though.

(3,732 posts)I wish it had been dedicated to Alma instead. I don't think just "getting women in there" is anything to celebrate anymore if women aren't going to forward an agenda that's for their fellow women.

Well, we may have lost big time this midterm, but since Wed morning we've slowly but surely learned of all the good things that did happen. Think about this, ladies. More women in Congress than ever. That alone helps soothe the wounds. It will be a beautiful picture on the steps of the Capital building.
And what can you say about Alma Adams. She's going to fall into the routine smoothly. What a beautiful family. And won with 75% of the vote! Isn't that kind of margin unheard of in recent history? I don't know who ran her campaign, but whoever it was, they need to get the word of how they did it to Democratic Party heads in each state. And send this information first to those 30 states where Republicans have painted their states red.
Thanks, Cha, for these photos and info.

(2,199 posts)bright spots in the tough year for Democrats in NC. Unfortunately, she is not my Representative, I'm stuck with Virginia Foxx. Maybe in two years our team will be able to show NC what true leadership looks like in NC. Until then we will continue to suffer under Foxx, Burr, Tillis and McCrory
