(2,273 posts)the voice audio only being on the left channel. I really want to remix that audio for them so it's on both left and right channels. Pretty scary stuff though, hopefully they can get an American history and current events class in sometime before they graduate.

(39,215 posts)do they require history etc.? For generations now we have been teaching one goal education. Example Nursing, mechanical engineering etc. and leaving out much of the type a 4 year college taught in the 70s. This leaves a student who may know a lot about the job she/he is preparing for but nothing about civics and the history of their own country.

(25,419 posts)Those are the minimum requirements for all 4 year degrees in state of Texas. Go figure.
Many students take advanced placement in high school so they don't have to take all 12 hours in college.
ETA: The 12 hours are
US History - 6 hrs
US and Texas Govt - 6 hrs

(39,215 posts)my courses dealt with history, government or people. I then got a degree in social work. The only courses I took that I don't think did me much good were the electives in sports and music. I went to college after I was older and sports were not my thing and music? Well I would have loved to excel in music but I do not have the ability to do so.

(13,108 posts)I would say the dumbing down of students has been very successful.
The Republicans must be so very proud, especially Texans.
They despise truth and knowledge.
No state should buy their textbooks from Texas.

OMFG!
In my Freshman year at college, I had the unpleasant job of announcing to a Biology survey class that President Kennedy had just been assassinated. I had just seen it on the TV news on my way to class. Sometimes politics are real. It looks like that time has passed.
No wonder they don't vote.

(33,224 posts)"who is the secretary general?" I replied "The Secretary General of the UN is Ban Ki Moon".
"No, of the United States"
"The US doesn't have a 'secretary general'. Do you mean Attorney General? If so, it's Eric Holder"
"Yeah, that's it. I was asked that question when I applied for a job at the Sheriff's office. How am I supposed to know that kind of stuff?"
She is about 45, she is applying for a job in law enforcement and was tested on the question about 24 hours previous. I can understand not knowing who the people are... but I would think it common knowledge that we have an attorney general.

(146,318 posts)The same questions asked of adults would get similar results. As a nation, we are pitifully ignorant about our government and how it works. Those kids in Texas don't know the answers now. Ten years from now, they still won't know the answers. That's the real tragedy of the United States. We live here, but know nothing about how things operate.

It's truly heartbreaking.

(146,318 posts)and you'd get the same lame answers, regardless of the age of the people you asked. Vice President? People don't give a damn who the Vice President is, and they have no idea. They know who the President is, but most people could not tell you the name of one of their two Senators.
We are horribly ignorant as a population, of our government and how it functions. We simply do not know, in general, much of anything. That is why we either don't vote or vote stupidly and against our own interests.
It is pitiful.

(37,573 posts)Although I am the guy who asked 3 graduating seniors, including one with honors chords, to name 2 supreme court justices and NONE of them could do it.

(11,441 posts)But not surprising... I see it at work everyday. The young-'uns are ADDICTED to their smartphones, social media, YouTube videos, sports, and comic book movies. And they didn't vote. Sigh.
Good job, Corporate America!
