CLEVELAND (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a northeast Ohio man to nine years in federal prison for illegally receiving $3 million in loans from a failed suburban Cleveland credit union.
A jury convicted 42-year-old Svetislav Vujovic (SVET'-iz-lawv VU'-yah-vik) of Brunswick earlier this year on 14 counts that included making false statements, money laundering and fraud. During his sentencing Monday, a judge ordered Vujovic to pay $3 million in restitution.
Vujovic was accused of receiving fraudulent loans from St. Paul Croatian Federal Credit Union in Eastlake between 2004 and 2008 after defaulting on previous loans. The credit union was shut down in 2010 after losing $170 million.
A statement said nearly 20 people have been convicted of crimes related to the credit union's collapse.
